She has an odd grasp of the word benign.

All that reading and she doesn't know about black helicopters?
Also, minor art error: the background is missing in the space between the "What?!!" and "Get your ass in here!!" speech bubbles.

Seen against the daylight sky, most aircraft look black.
I was expecting Atsali to say something
unhelpful like, "Uh, it looks like a helicopter." Is she getting less useless?

Suspect Kath has experience with black helicopters before. She knows this is not good.

Tiny wings upon her back.
A arm will drag her into a crack.
Bomb and missiles,
Land all around.
Mythic's best?? is here to stay.
Kath just says, "We run away."
AStsi wings got small real fast, kinda like she knew she what was coming.

Atsali has got to start reading more than cheap adventure and romance novels. An Apache inbound with a full weapons loadout is NOT "pretty benign".

Paul may be having some fun with us here.
Considering Atsali's avian characteristics, that Apache could be ten miles out and the crew hasn't spotted her yet or if it has she's just a white spot it the distance that won't be there in a few seconds.
OTOH the Apache may only be the first on the scene. What may follow is a Blackhawk loaded with agents sporting mountaineering gear to check out the sinkhole while the Apache flies the perimeter.

Very true. People who don't fly may not realize just how much ground there is down below. Spotting an aircraft in the empty sky is easy; being seen from up there is not always easy even when the folks on the ground are trying to attract someone's attention. But the new hole will probably make someone curious.

If Atsali thinks something is benign, that's a pretty good indication it's time to run and hide.

I didn't know there was anything special about black helicopters either.

Granted, my movie-watching has led me to be suspicious of anything in all black, but that's about as far as my knowledge goes.

If I may
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_helicopter does a pretty good job of summarizing.

How did Kat describe the pictogram? Swirls? She said maybe a star chart, I am gonna go out on a limb and say that it shows the layout of tunnels In a new section. I think maybe they are about to fall into it while trying to get away from the MIB.

Helicopters named after the Apache and Comanche, missiles called Tomahawks? Somehow, I think that people might have the impression that Native Americans are aggressive.

We may be about to find out new things about Kath's background. Was she involved in things involving black copters? We know little of her previous life. Given the revelations concerning other, seemingly
benign characters, nothing is too far fetched concerning the Wapsi players.
Also, Atsali's reading habits may have leaned more towards Tom Sawyer, Robin Hood and glorified, whitewashed pirate tales then more modern stories so she may be blissfully unaware of black-ops goings on and attack helicopter configurations.

I like how my assumptions of scale are constantly being overturned. Atsali is pretty casual about changing her size to fit the situation. The updates on perceived size of things like the cubbyhole (before the roof caved in) & wall carving & sinkhole & tunnel as more data is revealed. My poor suburban senses are just not used to objects that large. While a movie style long panning shot would give me time to adjust, that would take just too darn long in this one frame a day format.

Indeed... Army Apaches are a very very dark Olive Drab... when Airborne, at any reasonable distaince, they DO look black especially when back lit...
