Interestingly enough this is very similar to how the sound effects for Star wars were created by using the analog techniques of this digital exercise. The light saber was a dying transformer through a broadband filter with sweep, the blaster was contact mic on an antenna guy wire through an envelope generator to get a faster decay. Stuff like that.
