Now we know where Shelly, at least, got that from...

At least it's not like the button that causes an explosion that launches a very bewildered sheep...

I'm going to guess that Phix had set up a classic sort of trap for payback.

The lever opens a trap door in the Library floor, plunging Shelly and Connie into a deep pit below the building. They'll be bruised, battered, and coated with dust and grit and bits of ore left over from the excavation.

That's just temporary media influence. The Library was holding a Marx Brothers film retrospective.
