Not I. Her whimsical speech does reveal an intellectual bent that her sisters might not share, doesn't it?
I'm still getting the tween British schoolgirl vibe here...

Indeed, but what part of Britain? We all know Phix is "Alex Kingston-English" (Have no idea what that means) because Paul said so. As to Atsali (sounds like "Aunt Sally" don't it ?) being a Siren and her song, maybe she can control it like Black Canary's cry.
Just don't let her try out for American Idol or we're all DOOMED!
Right then, the Pun Jar is this way?

Somebody called for a Dwarf? Tepoz!

Let's round out the rest of the crew:

Fighter - Shelly
Magician - Jin
Scholar - Katherine
Rogue - Monica
Specialist - Atsali

That should round out the basic six! Of course, being an armchair adventurer means Atsali has rarely, if at all, been out in the big, bad, world beyond her normal, safe, dull haunts. No doubt she's tired of having to compete with foghorns while trying to attract seafarers and other such complexities of modern life. Clumsy and musical, eh? Perhaps she's the Bard!

I think i said something about it, but i may not have been the first.
Aleister Crow referenced the Siren of Canosa first (here), and two posts later I mentioned that I'd found references to bird goddesses in many cultures and that the Sirens of Greek myth were bird women. While this means I can't claim to be the first to mention Sirens, I'm damn proud that I was one of the few who did! :) I so rarely get things right, it's like winning a raffle or some other unlikely prize whenever I do.

Also, I'm highly amused by Atsali's reaction to Kat's response. :) I wonder if she's going to turn into an instant fangirl.

Ah ha. Here's what i thought i remembered saying (in the post that included the picture of the Siren of Carnosa):
Since Sirens lured sailors/explorers to their doom, her insistence that Katherine should go a-venturing with her might fit.

I'm sure she has a human form ... and i'm guessing somewhere in the vicinity of thirteen to fifteen apparent age.

Subject-verb-predicate. She's describing herself as opposed to others like her.

Heh. See, now I want these two to find their way to the Sword Coast, where they find a rainy coastline inhabited by squirrels, and Atsali will use her song powers to charm Katherine into attacking them. For the lulz.

Because that's how they roll.

I am just wondering this has been a setup for Katherine sort of the way it looks like Euryale seemed to be set up to meet Monica. (no, I do not believe in coincidence in the Wapsiverse.) :geek:

You might find a plaid skirt to fit her but white knee highs and Mary Janes are definitely out of the question!

I get more of an American Midwest 1960's teenybopper vibe from her.

Has no one pointed out yet that spelunking in the mind's eye sounds both suggestive and very painful?

Also: sirens are creatures, plural. But I don't think that's Paul's error.

I have a feeling we are in for a flock of malaprops containing a barbershop of botched similes...

Strikes me it also looks a bit like "'at's a lie", so maybe she's not being completely honest here...

All this talk of RPGs, Atsali's going to need a theme.

Might I recommend "Reading Rainbow"?

Just curious; where are some getting the 'she's up to something' vibes from with Atsali? I see the schoolgirl vibe easily. Plus I'm reminded on when Kats called herself a dork; with all her magniloquence, Atsali seems like she could be one, too. (Speaking as one who constantly got lost in books.) Atsali seems to be impressed with Kats planned adventure, so... dork leading the dork...

Seriously though, seeing the potential for someone to actually look up to Kats makes me happy.

*Kath seemed lost in the building like Shelly & Justin were, but only once Atsali approaches, does the main Library (not the annex) appear along with her. That seemed odd.

*Encountering a fellow traveller seems like a replay of Monica meeting Euryale, which is okay but invites comparison. Atsali is making the first move. Could be sheer friendliness, but few other first meetings in Wapsi have been a straight-out party hook-up. No, Paul's take on relationships has always had some sophistication. This feels too sudden by comparison.

*'Sirens are normally sedentary, but not me, I read books.' Funny, because it's contradictory. But also blatantly wrong. A test of resistance?

*After only a simple question or two, Kath unloads her entire intended course of action to a total stranger. And sirens have the power to do what, again?

That's a paranoiac's short list of suspicions for the last two pages. We'll see!

I agree. I hope that ultimately they become great friends, and help one another: it's a Wapsiverse way.

But... as Brandi pointed out to Lily, even good intentions can unleash great sorrows.

Yeah, I still don't see it. But thanks, Yamara, for the list. I read them, but I don't see where some are getting these theories from while reading the comic. And I know you didn't post these (well, I think, I have a hard time with names), but each theory invites a counter point.
*Kath seemed lost in the building like Shelly & Justin were, but only once Atsali approaches, does the main Library (not the annex) appear along with her. That seemed odd.
Actually, I think their visit was more dangerous at the time given the dogs/things/cant remember what they were. I know Shelly transformed because they were threatened.

Kats has a different personality, so she might need a different type to work with, someone more outgoing. Euryale was off in her own world; Kats wouldn't have been the type to disturb her.
*'Sirens are normally sedentary, but not me, I read books.' Funny, because it's contradictory. But also blatantly wrong. A test of resistance?
Or just silliness. Or just going on the fact that, to some, reading a book is akin to taking a journey. Though that then hints that other Sirens aren't avid book readers. Wonder if that's also a tell on their intelligence.
*After only a simple question or two, Kath unloads her entire intended course of action to a total stranger. And sirens have the power to do what, again?
Kats isn't the type to be deceptive. Plus she might believe most visitors have gone through Phix's test (and not sure there's anything to contradict that belief), so the chances are good anyone there deserves to be and might not be there just for malignant intentions (though all that is speculation, admittedly). Frankly, someone like that asks me a question, with teeth that big, yeah... I'm just laying it all out there. Though the fear aspect isn't really present between the two.
Yamara wrote:That's a paranoiac's short list of suspicions for the last two pages. We'll see!

True, though it seems just way too soon to call it. Plus if we're going on comparisons with character intros and library visits: Euryale 'stoned' Monica, though it was accidental, and Shelly had to deal with those dog things. Kats' visit appears way more benign when looking at those two. So while I don't think Atsali is intentionally bad news, she could be more like Euryale and just have a lot of accidents (if she's clumsy), which is more akin to what you're saying.

For now I'll just roll with it and hopes this will bring Kats a bit more into focus.
