This may be a clue to why he was so unbalanced and in need of high quantities of alcohol in his life.

Not to be a spoilsport, FYI it was common practice in the later 1800s to dress young boys and girls in skirt style clothing for their first few years. Of course, the fashionistas were more elaborate, but it dealt with a common issue of the era. Think "diapers."

It also helped his mother stay in practice. She was a really serious, tireless seamstress, and so it's only natural that she made his clothes in an ....
