Digit better be sure Monica understands to leave the spiders alone.

And it won't do much for the tree rats . . . but Katherine could handle those!

And, if there are any larger or more persistent vermin... perhaps Monica could talk to Tsillah, and offer to board Baxter and Boo for a few weeks.

IIRC Digit said once that human speech was extremely inefficient compared to spider speak. Therefore, she just had a very very very long conversation with Mama Spider and her babies.

I wonder what they said?

Someone was asking recently whether Monica had adopted Digit, and someone answered that she was merely her guardian. Today's comic would seem to reinforce that concept, seeing as Digit calls Monica "Ms Villareal"...

Would a spider turned human have a concept of "mom" even if Monica did adopt her? Inefficient human speech and all.

Also, what species of spider is this? She's covering Digit's entire palm!

One that is going to be effective pest control for the next year.

It looks like a wolf spider, the only spiders known for caring for their offspring. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wolf_spider

Being a jumping spider, Digit probably doesn't have a concept of "mom" beyond "spider that laid the egg I was in" and what she learned in the Library.

Loving Digit's side cut. It makes her very sleek.

I wonder, does "pest" includes squirrels?

Squirrels, raccoons, the occasional Fuller Brush salesman, Kirby vacuum cleaner peddler or religious equivalent...

My experience was that Fuller Brush and Kirby salesmen only appeared by invitation.

Fringe religious fanatics were a different matter.

So, you invite the Fuller Brush and Kirby salesmen to your home on appropriate occasions.

Usually, that's when your moat krakens and dire wolves start turning up their noses at a steady diet of religious fanatics. Krakens can be as finicky and temperamental as cats about their food. I can't really blame them though, as religious fanatics can be rather bitter and astringent.

What about Mormon Hunting Season? I mean, they're not really _fanatics_. They generally only visit your door once, unlike the Jehovah's Witnesses, who come by weekly.

The fun part on those? In my neighborhood, they keep coming by with Spanish-only speakers.

Monica hasn't had a chance to accidentally eat any of those spiders. . .yet. Maybe after she swallows a fly, she'll try swallowing a spider to get rid of it.

Get the spiders organised, have them start an industrial society, and before you know it they'll be taking down squirrels, cows, airliners, whatever!

Well, Digit apparently got her size, longevity, and intelligence from living in the Library as some sort of magic mutation or something. Since she's apparently able to have a conversation with this spider, maybe it's also one of the mentally- and physically-enhanced ones from the Library, and so doesn't quite correspond to any "normal" spider.

Hmmm. The recipes I've seen in Better Dens and Dragonkeeping magazine always seem to specify Jack Mormons... marinated in bourbon and then beer-battered.

We liked the Fuller Brush man . . . Mr. Wohl showed up every couple of months or so, and usually had a pretty good idea what people would want. I still use the hairbrush we bought from him when I was in high school . . . about '79 or so. Very solid products.

The Kirby rep came to town once or twice a year, and mostly called on existing customers. He came to our house twice, both times by recommendation, and both times mom decided that while the product was good, it was not worth the price.

Avon came through about once a month, too.
