On a different topic: are all modern engine compartments that crowded?
(Coming in from the point of view of a 1991 Suburban owner, whose engine compartment is much bigger, and more roomy all around... Even I can fit my hands in there to reach stuff, should I want to...)

For what it's worth, I remember helping my dad do stuff with our 1960 Rambler sedan. It had a hot-water straight six, and emission control was the crankcase vent sticking out the bottom of the engine. There was enough room for 10-year old me to sit on either wheel well and hand dad tools to adjust the single barrel carb on top of the intake manifold. He sat on the other wheel well!

What is the purpose of the little telephone button thingies on the steering wheel?

Was that the 90CID flathead with the spark plugs poking up out of the top, or the 232/256CID big whomper?

Control stereo, make and receive phone calls (left side) and cruise control and select modes on the trip computer (right side). It connects to my phone via Bluetooth, and i can make calls by voice command and receive calls; t has a pretty good quality speakerphone setup.
