And Kath figured it out. The frame's a nice touch.

Yup... not totally oblivious.

Kath is savvy, and she's definitely got style. Something tells me that a few years of raising one of the more unusual adoptive families in town have probably taught her a lot about how to deal gracefully with strange happenings.

So we still don't know just what happened between Castela punching the wall and her sitting in the comic shop. What did Atsali and Timothy do in the interval? Did he leave their home at the same time that Castela did? Did he stay for a little while to let Atsali tend to his "heatstroke"? Is he still passed out unnoticed in some odd corner? Did he decide to go back to the pool with Scarlet because it's relatively safer and saner there?

A great reverse of the old sitcom joke.

you mean Kath or Atsali??

Kath: " hmmm, more teen stuff... oh well, frame it or cover it.... :P :P "

Yes, Atsali is not 'totally' oblivious... she sees it all, but just does not see the 'meaning' in *social* cues... :)

What was it Kath had said? Something like "at her age, my breasts were a sexual as my big toe", or somthing to that effect.

I guess they still are to Atsali.

Still think someone needs to explain some things to her. She still a bit dense.

Again, she is NOT dense! just a version of aspergers, where you are very intelligent and observant, just find it difficult to pick up the subtle social signals...

She used to be able to read Pickle, but she completely missed her signals on this.

She was upset about, and focused on, and gushing about something which had nothing at all to do with Pickle and Timothy (her new top and her body image). Then, when she started to snap out of that, she completely misinterpreted Timothy's reaction, and focused completely on trying to deal with what she thought was the reason for his distress (heatstroke)... and heatstroke is, indeed, a rather urgent matter.

She didn't just miss Pickle's nonverbal cues. She came very close to completely ignoring what Pickle was saying verbally, too.

So, this time, I think "preoccupied" was a big part of what was going on, with her "socially oblivious" Asperger's-like cue blindness making things worse.

To make things worse... remember that this is a new Pickle (emotionally)! She's just left the "boys are loud, smelly, annoying monsters" stage of girlhood. She's likely never brought a boy home (even in transit to somewhere else) before.

This is the first time Atsali has ever seen, and had to deal with Pickle's new "boy crazy" side. Atsali hasn't yet had the opportunity to learn to interpret Pickle's cues about those sorts of feelings. It's not really surprising that she missed the subtext of what was going on.

I'd agree with that . . . and heatstroke is really urgent, so urgent that calling an ambulance is the best course. The purpose of first aid for heat stroke is to buy time for the ambulance to arrive.

This presented more like heat exhaustion, though, which is less urgent and can be properly treated with first aid.

And, looking at it properly, Timmy was exhausted from the heat . . .

Heatstroke... balderdash... Timmy's little head swelled to the point that no blood was getting to the big head- cranial flatline...

Even if you can read something, you have to look at it and make the effort.

Not far from heatstroke, when you think about it...

Subtle? Those were about as subtle as a sledgehammer to the forehead. And she missed them.

BUT then she goes on to quote 'what happened' in full detail... can you do that??

That reminds me of a part from Brave New World, where it mentions a failed rapid teaching method (or partially failed; can't remember) involving teaching children in their sleep or something. It describes an issue with the method, and a boy is asked to recite something, and is then asked a question, the answer to which is in what he recited. Only, he says he doesn't know, and gets really frustrated when they keep making him recite it.
