Let's talk layers. I had to work in -70 windchill one Winter at my first job. Nobody would bring the carts in with them.jwhouk wrote:At -20F, there is no amount of clothing that can keep you warm.
I was wearing multiple layers under a lined London Fog and covered my nose and mouth lightly but generously with my scarves.
I brought in all the carts, never felt the cold. After about the fourth time I did this, my bosses made me stay in.
They forbid the customers to take the carts out, and had them pull up to the front of the store to get their goods, citing dangers to us, and dangers to themselves from catching the carts with their bumpers because they could not see them.
I still don't see the fuss...guess that's why they called me a Polar Bear.
Yanno how some people have Angels/Devils for a conscience? I have a Dark Elf ShadowKnight and a Half Elf Ranger for mine. The really bad part is when they agree on something.

Re: Lets Talk Pie!
DRESS IN LAYERS. That is Rule Number One for proper winter garb. Wicking layer, three levels of insulation at least, and a shell. I tend to combine wicking and insulating as well as insulating and shell.
In the fiercest winter weather, I will have wicking socks, normal socks, then Omniwool socks, then my good-ol' Sorel boots... Omniwool base layer, fleece-lined jeans, snowboarding overalls... Omniwool base layer, tshirt, medium-weight shirt, hoodie, and winter coat... Wool mittens under regular mittens... Ninja mask, double-knit ski mask, bandanna over mouth and nose, snowboarding goggles, and hood of both hoodie and coat.
As I move and start to warm up, I start taking layers off, keeping the outer shell layer in place as long as possible. If I'm really working I'll end up dressed for autumn/spring weather.

Dressing warmly for trekking through Camp Permafrost is the way to go, and no I don't care what that hyperactive little midgit did first.
Cold showers are sufficiently cool enough for me thank you very much.

Layers. I was working in -70 F windchill near gale force winds in a blizzard pushing carts. I didn't get very cold because layers and I kept moving.Sgt. Thermal silk, thinsulate, wool, leather...lots of layers. Heavy Doc's too with boot socks.
The belts on the sleeves of gentlemen's long coats are for sealing openings for air to get in, and to keep the gloves secure. Practical, not like lousy ladies longcoats.

You mean, the one that started this very thread?
The one which was even added as an inline image, in the very next post, just so people wouldn't have to follow the links provided in the initial post?
