Oopsie! Looks like someone messed up somewhere. Maybe they didn't think Atsali looked under 30, and didn't card her? Maybe they didn't look at her face at all? And we know how bird-brained she can be about things like this... (How can they not know what Bourbon is?)

Somehow I don't think they went out to buy the eggnog. I guess they just raided the fridge.

It might be that the clerk didn't know it was the 'Leaded' version (general distraction), and/or that selling Atsali anything is a very easy thing to contribute to (Siren/Succubus unintended influence).

Well, 1st off it's Paul writing this stuff, but in any case you might be surprised not only by the old timey small batch distillers (not just pre-prohibition but pre-statehood) but also the current upwelling in boutique distillery production.

So long as it tastes good, I don't care what state it comes from.

...unless we're talking states of matter. I'd imagine freezing it ruins it (though it'd take some effort to freeze it). And I don't know of any baking recipes that call for bourbon. Though, I'd imagine it'd be something to do with chocolate.

Okay, I hadn't thought of that one . . . . . . But she's almost 17 and doesn't know what bourbon is?

By the time I was 17, several of my classmates had made booze . . . I was told that moonshine made from green peppers tastes weird.

As far as Iowa bourbon . . . lots of corn in Iowa, so it makes sense that some of it would be made into bourbon. And the craft distilleries are turning up everywhere. However, according to this article, 95% of bourbon is made in Kentucky.

And I suspect they raided the fridge somewhere . . . but whose fridge?

Thinking about it ... how would Atsali know what Bourbon is? She grew up in an orphanage and if Kath doesn't like to drink Bourbon now and then, there isn't much chance that Atsali got in contact with any good booze.

Now why Nadette doesn't know is another question.

As for "whose fridge" ... they are in a luxurious cabin, sure there are enough fridges around for one to hold eggnog in christmas season.

and was replied to with:

Look up Cedar Ridge. They don't do as high a proof on their Rye Whiskey as I'd preffer but they're not half bad for being in Iowa.

I'm just trying to figure out how a carton eggnog has bourbon in it... Most stuff 'round here in cartons is NA. Of course, I live on the "right" side of the river, where eggnog is better known for its dairy content than its alcohol...

Actually, I suspect that Atsali does know, intellectually . . . but hadn't read the carton. She'll probably start off with where the term originated, and how Bourbon County got split up, and . . . you know, her usual wrong-time display of book-learnin'.

Unless the hangover is too oppressive/distracting.

But why would you have it in a fridge at a place you weren't planning to use . . . and if you were planning on using it, where are the others? Unless this is Christmas morning and the plan was to be there starting on say Boxing Day (26 December).

It is offered, though it's usually not the better stuff (not that I like eggnog or alcohol- blech - alcohol is a solvent or motor fuel).

My wife and I were staying in Carcassonne (southeastern France) a few months ago and had walked from our apartment to a local home-in-the-wall food store to buy supplies for dinner. A rather harried-looking elderly man dashed in the door, looked around, came over to us, and asked rather urgently "Do you speak English?" in what was clearly an English accent.

"Yes. Well, American... close enough" I replied.

Accuracy in such matters is sometimes important... even critical. Phrases such as "Knock me up in the morning" could prove troublesome if interpreted in the wrong local context.

Actually, freezing is a way to increase the concentration of alcohol. The water it's mixed with will freeze first, so you want to catch the stuff while there's still some liquid. Separate out the liquid and then throw away the ice.

This is my guess for what "ambrosia" originally was. The ancient Greeks associated it with their gods, who were thought to live on a mountaintop... where one would routinely find freezing temperatures in winter. They certainly didn't have heat-based distilling apparatus, so this is probably the only way they'd encounter alcohol at concentrations higher than those produced directly by fermentation.
