Lesson one: If you poke them and they are real that reaction you see is annoyance.

well, Atsali knows her limitations, one of which is not knowing enough to know what to ask about what she doesn't know.

Once, when much younger, I called an Information help line, and when they answered, I realized I had no idea how to phrase the question! Very awkward. Kind of like going to the hardware store and asking for that thing on the gadget that makes it work -- the round one, don't cha know?

The art of forming a question is rarely taught. You usually learn it after the time you need it the most.

Jin's got 8,000+ years experience and practice, I don't think Atsali could have picked a better mentor.

The new Gin is nice. WIthout the insanity and the pressure to fix the clock she's a different person.

I've been wondering... Others have tried to get Atsali to understand how to read people too... Could it be that all the teaching in the world won't help her? That maybe she's incapable of understanding? I get the feeling it's something that isn't hardwired into her genome to even understand. Sirens, by nature, survive by using their hardwired instincts to take what they want to survive. They never needed social skills to interact with other people. a Million years of evolutionary instinct isn't an easy thing to unlearn.
It's like most of us. Unless something directly affects us, we could really give two shits, but then when faced with that same circumstance we didn't give a shit about three minutes ago, we're incapable of handling it because it's not something we felt we needed to know how to cope with. I get the feeling this is what it's like for Atsali... only on an evolutionary scale.

That sounds like a job for . . . wait for it. . . .Devyn.
She apparently can help people understand exactly how there actions make other people feel. Downside to that of course is that if Devyn tries it with bird brain (who actually likes Devyn) Devyn could run out of teddy bears, rainbows and unicorns. . .

Like color blind, or tone deaf? No, she's capable of noticing facial expression... we LEARN this sort of thing as children, I suspect there's never been the DRIVE to learn it as WE are social critters

No, its the other way round.. she needs to 'see' (Devyn style) how people feel.. ??? a sort of 'terror vision' version??? ...no, still too vague for her!!
She needs some 'google glass' thing, that lights up "SAD" when they detect it, or 'she likes you', or whatever...

:p
(some facial expression are still not cclear enough for her....) and then she continues, diggin a deeper hole....

I think her situation is closer to am amoral person, she understands they exist but cant make the jump to applying it to herself. A mentor can help her learn to read the major cues but i dont know that she will ever pick up the little things.

If she has
Prosopagnosia, no amount of practice will help. (Maybe sirens lack fusiform gyri.)

It would seem, now and again, I must comment on my immediate environment.
The balance of respectfulness and irreverence are often opposing forces...
edit;
I was looking at the main page for tomorrow's entry and I was reviewing today's ('test') couple of panels. I had noticed but didn't mention the first go-round, that I was enjoying the art and expressiveness of the characters, the use of effects to give the backgrounds a sense of distance and overall depth, and that this last line of Atsali's reminds me of... Bud? Ms Wahnee? "Yes!, That!"
Oh, and the Tig o' Bittie thing, yeah, still true...
notthattheresanythingwrongwiththat...
