What's been keeping me busy

I've been having to limit my online presence at night since I've been having to get up uncharacteristically early almost every day. I'm kind of in the middle of buying a house. That's the sort of thing adults are supposed to buy, right? Things like cars and boats and houses? 3 Bed, 2 bath, 1531sq ft on .37 acre lot right in the neighborhood I grew up in. I'll have a barbecue or something and all will be invited.

There is a good chance I will have to buy a lawn mower.

Grownupping is tiring.

Hey, congratulations! Yeah, it's tiring and somewhat daunting. On the other hand, it will let you get in that bassoon practice without a risk of annoying the downstairs neighbors.

Noth having to have / deal with a landlord is an amazingly liberating experience!

As to the lawn... can you rent in a herd of goats occasionally? (not "stoats", mind you!)

I have no downstairs neighbors right now, but do to the sides. And no bassoon for me. I was a saxophone player. Double reeds are weird.

I had to look up stoats. Demz kyut. I kind of want one now.

Wait... You're gonna have a BBQ and all of US are invited? Or did I just really misunderstand that bit?

If you are local to the DFW area.

Does that work in barbecue grills or is it a strictly in-ground fire pit thing?

The roofer is coming out Saturday to look at the roof. I really hope the damage is superficial just needing new shingles, not hiding some kind of structural problem.

Don't be too surprised if some of the underlayment (plywood) turns out to have rotted... it's a common problem.

As long as the rot hasn't gotten down into the rafters, it's a pretty quick fix - rip off the old plywood, and nail on new sheets... then, re-shingle over it.

I had our house re-roofed back in May while my wife was out of town. Impressively fast - the tear-off team arrived at 8, and by around 1:30 all of the old shingles had been ripped off, tossed into a dump truck, and driven away. Removal and replacement of the rotted parts of the plywood (down at the gutter-line) was done by the end of the day, slots had been cut in the plywood for the new ridge-line vents, and about a quarter of the new shingles had been nailed on. All of the major work was done by the end of day 2, with just some trim work and detailing for day 3.

Just a short drive up I-45 for me! I'll bring the adult beverages!

Huh.
Cool.
Unfortunately, I am up in Chicago. And I don't have time to go to Texas.
Bummer.

And about that deluxe underground storm shelter in the back yard: what happens in the bunker stays in the bunker. ;)

It depends...it really doesn't last for 'pig-in-the-ground' that well, but it's much better than Kingsford starter fluid to get the coals going, especially hot woods like apple, eucalyptus and manzanita... but I've grilled rattlesnake over napalm with a cast iron skillet and it worked just dandy- little butter, little garlic- YUMMM!!!

My best friend (gone now, cancer dammit right before the turn of the century) lived in Waco Tx in the shadow of the old Baylor stadium and had a storm shelter in his back yard. Kept all his camping stuff there. Including a practice grenade purchased from the local friendly military surplus store.

After he passed, his brother was clearing the shelter and came across the grenade. Knowing his brother, and his brother having been a Vietnam vet, he carefully backed out of the shelter and called the neighbor, a local law enforcement type person. She immediately called in the bomb squad (or what passed for one in Waco) and they came out and cleared the device.

Heck, shoulda called me. I have the other one he bought and coulda told them fuggedaboudit! Fortunately my daughter is aware of the artifact and will not freak if faced with similar dilemma.

And I'll bring the LRRP canister he gave me (to keep the margaritas cold) and the camo netting to the 'Q for shade.

Love the backyard!! :) Congrats on your adulting! It's not always fun or easy to adult, but you seem to be doing fairly well. :)

Unfortunately everything is still not set. The roofer told the seller to call their insurance company who won't be out to look at it until this upcoming weekend. :(
