I'm not sure if she's being vicious or just being honest.

And THAT'S why Atsali won't ask the boy in person if he likes her...

Because of frame #2 it is still unclear if the siren's song is a general compulsion or induces eros.

I guess we get to see whether the Island is equipped with a cold shower?

Yeah, this experience may be a bit rough for Berdine. As for being vicious... well, I'd go for "blunt" instead. I don't think Atsali's goal was to cause distress or humiliation... more "Take me seriously, Berdine, there's a real reason why you shouldn't push me on this subject that I've told you not to push on. Here's why it's serious, and why I won't be be running interference for you with the boys."

Berdine's sorta slipped into a "big sister" role with Atsali from the time they first met... not quite talking down to her, but not really speaking to her as an equal. I think this is the moment when Berdine is going to have to acknowedge Atsali as a true peer... in both power, and a sense of responsibility about it.

I would say that Atsali did that well and with little damage. The only people on the island are the three of them so there should be no humiliating fallout from her demonstration. As an old self defense instructor friend of mine liked to say "If the direct approach of appealing to their better natures does not work, try the blunt force trauma approach next."

I would think just dropping her in the ocean should be enough to snap her out of it, since Astali wasn't really trying very hard...

Not sealed with a kiss, but punctuated with a faceplant.

Im'a say general compulsion, because Berdine was totally motionless until Atsali started with the suggestion chain.

"There we go. Oh dear, that was easy..."

Sumpin' tells me 'Sali don't know her own strength yet...

I think Atsila does know how strong she is. I think that comment is sarcasm than surprise.

I think she knows exactly what she's capable of.

She's got the genes, no question about it.

Gonna need all the smarts, tactical thinking, maturity, and wisdom she can drum up (her own, her friends, and her entire adoptive extended family's) to figure out how to do two things at the same time: keep to her chosen set of ethics, and not have to become a nun.

I had thought about that, until taking the look on her face into account - I think this is the first time she's intentionally enthralled someone, and it was far, =far= too easy...

Y'know, I can tell that even if Berdine is mad about this at first, it won't last. Just looking at Nadette's line in the first panel, and how unworried she seems, just answering in stride, I really doubt she'd let her sister be mad at Atsali, really I think she's siding with Atsali on this.

First words out of Nadette's mouth: "...Well, you asked for it, sis - kickin' that hornet's nest..."

I'm gonna agree with the madkansan on this one. I think that Atsali had a basic understanding of what she's capable of, but i think this is probably the first time she's taken her powers out for a test run on an actual living person.

She probably had an instinctual understanding of how to use her Voice, the way a cat knows the right place to bite a mouse on the neck, but the "oh dear" shows that she didn't realize how effective the Voice really is.

I dunno, on the whole oh dear front, in my opinion it was not uttered in surprise, the ... after it kinda goes against that. Though I could always be wrong.
