Crowdsourcing

Once upon a time, in a different web forum for a different webcomic, the artist of said comic had a sudden (self-inflicted) injury that prevented him from doing the comic for a few weeks. The fans of said webcomic had enough funny and talent together, and shortly after this incident occurred one of their members* came forth with the following idea:
I'd been toying with the idea of a "guest strip" (or two) that would be done basically by the people of the forums as a whole.

It's not like we don't have the talent - the 86 versions of the Caption Contest suggest we have enough in the way of snark and savagery that we could come up with dialogue for our beloved characters; and we have some people who have posted to the fanart thread who could do some of the sketching/drawing.

And, of course, there's "QC: Behind The Scenes" - but that's something COMPLETELY different.

So I'll put this out there as our fearless leader is recuperating: Could we put together a strip or two of QC?
The result? This.

Now. We have the same talent here, methinks. Could we help Paul out with our own "crowdsourced" Wapsi Square strip?

Three things I'd have to suggest:
  • It would have to fit in with continuity;
  • It would be a one-time thing; and
  • NO PORN or NSFW stuff.
So - what say you all? Could we put together a strip of Waspi Square - a Fan Strip?

You obviously put two-and-two together, didn't you?

Here's my thinking: something simple. Maybe a snow gag with Monica and Kevin?

so ......... does that mean we are not allowed to photochop some of the pages with Tina and replace her dialogue with some of Mrs Slocombe (BBC: Are You Being Served) talking about her cat? err ... that link seems to be not working at the moment - try the google cache if it doesn't
[isn't it fun finding out what they could say on 70's TV :D]

actually, just quotes from the show + random Wapsi pages would probably not be allowed :(

That's funny.

Excellent! :)

Your drawings have touched upon a big fuzzy question in social research. Just what are the social and ethical rules for fictional characters taking part in crossover events?

Are they allowed to affect or change the canon in the strip in which they are guesting?

Are they even allowed to participate in it, or are their appearances always considered a Duck Dodgers "Let's just pretend that never happened" non-canon anomaly?

How do the rules differ between "official" bidirectional crossovers (e.g. the Sluggy Freelance / User Friendly crossover some years ago), unidirectional guest appearances, guest-artist depictions of a strip's own characters, and fan-fic mashups?

If romance or hookups occur, are these capable of having long-term consequences, or are they always of the "What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas" variety?

How are characters to cope with situations in which their own natures (e.g. superpowers, personal relationships, or species) are fundamentally at odds with the strip they are visiting? How are the "resident" characters supposed to react to such impossibilities or "unacceptables"?

is there a "Miss Manners" who advises about such social rules? or a "Dear Abby" who helps resolve the inevitable conflicts?

Heh heh, I think it depends on if the interaction is cooperative or a hostile takeover! My thoughts...

1) What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas! Unless agreed to not be the case! >_<

2) Character assumes the max powers available to the strip in question. No supers in a non-super comic!

3) Inevitable conflicts... drama, yay!

That's my two bits, feel free to create your own rules where everyone has fun!

Dragonaur I really liked your "guest comics!" I thought your icon looked familiar and the name rang a bell. I used to read your comic before my one computer crashed big time and I lost all my webcomics lists. Catching up on your comic and enjoying it again. I wonder how many others I forgot to find again!? Thanks for the laughs! An old fan.

Attention! This is a Public Service Announcement of a

Screen Spew Alert!

Having completed 2 of six panels regarding The Adventures of Teen Monica, the (so called) artist is providing fair warning of the upcoming potential for severe mirth, giggling, and possible rib cramps, as well as distress to computer equipment and nearby neatly arranged objects. Consider yourself warned!

Oh wow! I totally understand. Sometimes I have a favorite comic that I don't bookmark. But then something happens, a hiatus, or I have a vacation, work gets tough or some thing upsets the flow and I forget all about it!

Often enough said comic is part of a web ring or or one ends up re-acquiring it seeing good 'ol advertising. But I have none of those things, so I'm glad we simply crossed paths again!

In my defense, I think my story is a bit tighter now, and the art is a bit better so hopefully it'll be a bit more memorable and there will be more of a reason to check back for the next page! >_<

I wish I could up date on a daily basis like Wapsi. But I hope you can enjoy the comic even at the slow pace I'm able to develop it!

I'm looking forward to seeing it. I have a feeling it's going to be both inked and colored!
