Atlanta Faces Major Ice Storm Threat at Midweek
Kristina Pydynowski, Senior Meteorologist/Accuweather/February 10, 2014; 11:00 AM wrote: An ice storm will threaten Atlanta with dangerous travel and potential power outages at midweek.
While heavy snow will fall north of Atlanta, it will not be snow that will threaten to bring the city to a halt at midweek but sleet and freezing rain from a prolonged wintry weather event for the South.
The storm will begin as rain late Monday night that will continue into the daylight hours on Tuesday.
As colder air works in farther south across the Atlanta area, the rain will mix with then change to sleet and freezing rain on Tuesday.
The ice is expected to continue through Tuesday night and Wednesday, leading to extremely hazardous travel and potential power outages.
Snow will fall over northernmost Georgia and the southern Appalachians during much of the storm.
Officials may be forced to close roads and interstates if conditions become too dangerous for motorists. Airline passengers should prepare for possible lengthy delays and flight cancellations.
The good news is that milder air will quickly follow this winter storm.
Highs in the 50s are expected for Thursday and Friday.
