Shellyvision FTW!
Castela is even cuter in Shellyvision.

I think this is Castela-Vision®. It's cuter than Shelly-Vision®...

I just wonder why we've recently seen these quick sketches of Wapsi rather than the usual well drawn strips. I am unsure if using Shellyvision actually improves the strip. In some ways it comes across as something just quickly thrown together simply to have something to post. Is this one even in the story line, or is it like many of the other sketches Paul tosses in the the ladies at times? I hope we don't see a lot of these in the future as I much prefer the normal strip he draws.

I went back and re-read the strip about the two Vamps and from the second read it sounds like they HELPED out rather than doing the actual adopting . So....Yeah my bet is on Katherine, Even Money that shes the new Mommy to the girls. Monica and Shelly will have to play "Gaurdian Angels" to both of them.txmystic wrote:Mama? Would this be Katherine?
Re: Like Heroes 2013-08-20
I guess the real question is... How long had Castela been at the orphanage? (We do know it has been two months since Kath had adopted Atsali and Castela) I hesitate to say she was orphaned because she stated her parents "threw her away". This in turn leads to deeper questions... like, were her parents humans who couldn't deal with the fact that Castela was a paranormal? How old was Castela before her parents "threw her away"? Was she old enough to have conversations about Monica and Shelly and remember them? Or, being plant based, would Castela have been a seed pod, which fell away from her parent tree much like a helicopter seed pod of the maple tree? If so, that might explain why she felt she'd been thrown away. Somehow I'm not seeing Kath forcing Castela or Atsali to see her as "mom" or even offering it as an option yet. Kath is pretty smart... she seems to know what she was getting into with Atsali... and adapting to the changing situation when she saw the bond between Atsali and Castela... I get the feeling that Kath would let them settle in and get adjusted before even bringing up the subject of just what their status is.Fairportfan wrote:One assumes...txmystic wrote:Mama? Kath has grown through her adventure... She's adapting and overcoming everything that stands in her way. A far cry from the Kath who would sit in her apartment and equivocate on whether she should go out or not, wouldn't you say? I'm curious to see who Castela is referring to as 'mom'.

I happen to love shellyvision. Sometimes less is more. And since the first time we encountered it this has been the case.zachariah wrote:I just wonder why we've recently seen these quick sketches of Wapsi rather than the usual well drawn strips. Also never dismiss something that apparently looks quick and basic, sometimes these can be the hardest images to do well, especially if your normal style is far more rounded. In this page it highlights Mon and Shel's elated embaasment at being gushed over by their young fan.
There is a tradition in anime and manga where the art will change style (usually to some Chibi form) to indicate 'I'm being deliberately silly here' and Shellyvision is Paul's version of that. I think that it is a perfect addition to the strip, but will agree its power comes from being used sparingly.

OK, so Mon & Shelly have not met Castela before now. I guess I stand corrected.

Ah! Mighty-Mite hero worship... That should keep the two super-hero junior titans grounded for awhile.

At first I thought Castela's eyes were somewhat like Kath's... now that I know she has hollow sockets with little stems for eyes, I'm reminded of that little guy that was stationed with Mr. Scott in the J.J. Abrams Star Trek reset movie... He had those little stem eyes too. Nudge better hone Castela's skills at mimicking humans PDQ...
Monica and Shelly are both pretty modest about their abilities, really... Monica hasn't really been seen much since gaining full, recognized Jaguar Girl Status. Shelly has been scared shitless that she'll sphinx out and hurt someone, so they're pretty humble about it all really. That's the first time they've really cut loose in reference to their abilities where what the public saw wasn't a concern.
One might argue Shelly has, in the incident where she almost gutted her boy toy cop and grabbed him and was flying him to the hospital. When he argued that people would see, she wooshed past a bus stop full of people and stated that "People only see what they want to see." The response from the people was that the wind was picking up.
You could also argue that Monica has, poiting here and there and poiting people here and there... into downtown naked, and 30 feet over lake Calhoun... which of course would bring more attention to the poitees than Monica but that's beside the point.
Methinks that Mon and Shel are getting the idea pounded into them that whether they like it or not, they are a part of something much larger than themselves...

Speaking of Hero Worship, wait until Castela meets Euryale! She'll nearly get the pollen hugged out, she such a sweetie. Not to mention all the stories the Georgeous Gorgon has about Monica and Shelly. She may also have a trick or two about assuming a human form to teach the kid.
Like DilyV, I've been wondering about Castela thinking she was "Thrown away." To me, it hinges on the circumstances of her birth, and which way her parentage swings. We will just have to see when it's the proper time for more of her backstory to be told.
