A pretty parade formation doesn't account for much when the shooting starts.

Well, I heard it was "malice" rather than "enemy action." Then I stumbled across a very important corollary:
"Never attribute to stupidity what can adequately be explained by your own ignorance."
I've been a much happier, calmer man since then.
