My immediate thought was of Calista and the Gym teacher who mentioned a supposed mermaid ability...

I'm guessing mermaids could count as sea mammals, but neither of those incidents mention any limiting factor...

Gotta keep looking, I guess...

That's utility, not ability. Unless for some or other reason you find the propelling of golf balls through garden hoses useful, that's not what I had in mind.

(Yes, there are other uses of those abilities, but for some or other reasons, no one's discussed those.)

Are Gorgons condidered sea mammals? Her utility being that of being able to write such comprehensive books on marine studies, and her limiting factor being that of having to heavily edit her findings, because "Stuff out ther folks ought'n not be know'n 'bout!"

... I'm going to have to allow that. She's definitely mammalian, at least, and being able to breathe under the water, I'd say she qualifies as sea mammal also. (I'll keep my original answer for a somewhat more specific question, then.)

So yeah. Your question?

Throughout this quiz, there have typically been two kinds of answers: the ones where you think you know, and go looking for it (whether it turns out to be it or not is a different story), and the ones you have no idea about, and have to go browse through the comic to find the answer. Often, you will try out the first type, making an educated guess, and only go browsing when your guess turns out to be wrong. Ans sometimes, your "wrong" guess turns out to be acceptable, as is the case here.

I think that the diversity of questions and methods for answering is one thing that makes this quiz so interesting.

Having said that, I am now curious as to what was the answer you were looking for. But I certainly understand the desire to wait and ask again differently later: I did that too (with Monica's cereal, which was originally intended to be answered as part of the "What breakfast scenes have we seen" question, but was skipped, being replaced by other scenes which I had forgotten).

Question forthcoming...

Q: I am a cliché, a trite sentence. People often use me as an excuse. One character once used me, however, in a way that is completely unusual for me. What phrase am I?

M's "It's not you, it's me"?

K: I've never heard that phrase used to start anything before. That's cool.

ETA: For reasons of logistics, I'll retroactively assume that was the correct answer, and equally retroactively follow up with my more specific question ...

Q: Who discussed the utility and associated limiting factors of mundane sea mammals?

I'd guess, though, that you were originally thinking of this discussion between Monica and Amanda.

Yes, I suppose that you might have phrased your original question a bit more specifically, to avoid the ambiguity. In a way it's a pity that there ain't no manatee clause.

(Sorry to spoil your chance of reuse. Well, no, I'm really not very... but I assert the claim that the Pun Jar made me do it. *clink*)

(ETA: Well, strictly Amanda is not participating in that particular discussion, so it's really just Monica discussing it. But that's nitpicking, so ...)

Correct, Dave. And I've retroactively posted my more specific question, so, assuming it was my turn to ask a question, it is now your turn.

... lest we assume too much, I suppose we might wait for confirmation from LW that my answer to his latest question was correct?

(Meh. Time travel and retcons mess up the narrative.)

Yep, that's the one.glad to see you found it, and so quickly, too.

The moment I read this sentence, I knew immediately where that link was pointing, without having to look at the link... :D

But that's part of the fun of this thread: unintended consequences... Like when I asked for three examples of people channeling Bones McCoy, and two of the examples given as answers were valid, but different from the ones I had in mind (I simply had not gone through quite enough of the archives, at that time, to realize there were more than just three examples...)

This is the $1556.85 question all over again!

You might want to look again at the post before yours... You'll realize you didn't spoil Sidhekin's chance at reusing his question, but rather you answered it, once he did ask again, in a more specific fashion... :D

In other words, Dave, we're waiting for your question!

Well, you may have been a tad hasty, but then again, you did provide a right answer (one that, whether it was the one I was looking for or not, did fit the parameters of the question), and provided a link to corroborate your point. So your behavior was entirely within the previously stated parameters of this thread (parameters which did evolve somewhat, over time, as the situation demanded.) This is not the first time someone posts such an answer and immediately asks their question, nor will it be, I suspect, the last time. So don't feel bad.

In fact, it was a good thing you posted it already, since Dave thought he was adding to the previous (less specific) question and "ruining" your chance to reuse your question...

I think he actually edited that re-ask into his message, after I followed up with my own answer. As he said, time travel really confuses things... per the lion who was cloned from a tiny portion of his father's father's front fore-limb, who exclaimed "I'm my own grand-paw."

Ah. I was not aware of that. But now that you mention it, I do notice that his post was edited after your post was made.

Dietzel used a broom on his head to suggest asking Bud some questions about the temple that the calendar might be in.

Looking for the link now...

Edit: Found it!

I can't think of any other instance, but I will still wait for confirmation, in order to avoid any necessary time travel... :P

No, I came in after it was all said and done, never having noticed the timestamps of his post and of your edit. So I guess I'm not as funny as you thought I was...

Since Dave specified "someone", I can't think of anything but the broom. But even if there are other instances, I pretty sure your answer is good.

The broomstick-hair reference to Bud by Dietzel is the one I was thinking of.

So, lake_wrangler, the next question is yours!

That's a tricky one. What constitutes "attacked", and what constitutes "fast and furious"?

Surely taking out her heart constitutes an attack, but does retaliation by public nudity constitute "fast and furious"? Okay, it's furious, but it's not really fast, is it?

Surely riddling with Kalashnikov and a variety of other artillery constitutes an attack, but does rubber room qualify as "fast and furious"? Quickly executed, but more calm than furious, no?

Does attack by snow count, and does retaliation by Bahamas climate qualify as "fast and furious"? I could argue both ...

Do personal attacks count? Surely relatiation by active volcano qualifies as "fast and furious".

... there are other instances I could mention, but none I can think of where both criteria are clearly satisfied.

Tricky.
