Hee, hee! Very nice indeed!

Reminds me a bit of an old Doonesbury, when Zonker's Uncle Duke was serving as governor of Samoa. There was a series of rather unnatural "natural disasters" (including snow... which "never sticks" according to Duke's majordomo). Eventually it was revealed that the local authorities had failed to perform one of the required virgin sacrifices to the volcano (the only available virgin took one look and said "No way!") and it erupted.

Majordomo: "Excuse me, sir. There's some lava here to see you."

I decided to play around a bit more with the "Dark Phoenix Monica" image, and make it a bit less stylized.

I traced in some of her facial features and the outline of her face (using Paul's "Guard Dogs" as the basis). Instead of using a flat translucent grey for her hair, I replaced it with a darkened version of her hair color from the color-references page, made it fully opaque, and then scribble-erased it to add translucency and texture. Highlighted the eyes a bit, and added lipstick (her reference color, darkened).

Developing the background for this project was fun. I knew I wanted flame (pretty easy - just part of a bonfire image) and stars. After looking around for a while I found that the Cocoon Nebula is a rich and colorful star-field which includes some very nice (and very dark) dust lanes. They make a perfect "astral smoke" when combined with Monica's "astral fire".

There's one little addition to the star-field in this second image. Look up and to (your) left of Monica's head, to a very dark part of the dust lane. See that one little yellowish-white dot there?

That's Charon (Pluto's moon)... I actually found a photo!

Cool Dave. :) I like the changes, and adding Charon was cool, too. I wish I was better at putting bits like that in. I think it shows that you, and others, put in a lot of thought when you add Easter Eggs like that.

And pretty much the finished version -

I'm envisioning the entrance to a new Wapsi Square theme/adventure park.

On one side, a Hulkish statue of Monica, glyph alight, wrapped in her Dark Phoenix fury.

On the other, a statue of Shelly, half-transformed into a sphinx, whirling and slashing. Exploded punching bag in evidence behind her.

Over the entrance, a sign written in Paul's signature Wapsi Square font:

Raging Daughters

Finally done. Watch on Youtube here. (everything actually scrolls smoothly in the original, YT always screws things up)

And yes, ALL the drawing was done in MS Paint.

Oh, that's fun!

I really like your use of that classic FM-synthesis videogame music!

The Shelly maquette isn't painted yet and the flame jets have yet to be installed in Monica...

Oh, so THAT's what they're going to build in the northeast outlot of Mall of America. Right across from Bud's favorite store - IKEA.

Actually, it was all the original game music code (in NSF files) played by the Winamp plugin sound emulator NotSoFatSo. It's Pulse Code Modulation, not FM. Sunsoft was just that badass at making it sound more advanced. Gimmick! does use a version of the FME-7 expansion chip but the 3 channels it added were still PCM.

Jabberwonky, how much do tickets cost? :)

Also, if you can't watch the Youtube video, you can download the original AVI (encoded as H264) file here. I would have had it done a day earlier but the problem I thought I was having with the files turned out to be the codecs on my own computer got messed up.

Gah! That's blocked by the filters on my work computer. Stupid filters!
(I can't visit Questionable Content from work. I think because the name of the site is 'Questionable Content')

12 and under - $18.00
13 and over - $26.00 for a day pass
