According to Jacqui, Shelly would not be caught dead doing anything organized.

... but Shelly refused to admit it, so I'm not sure ... is that what you had in mind?

Okay then.

Q: How tall is Shelly? (Not the Sphinx version, thanks.)

I'm still looking for an in-comic official answer.

Meanwhile, judging from the cover of Book 1, and knowing that Monica has stated before that she was 4'11", I'd say Shelly is probably around 5'5" or 5'6"

On the other hand, she later said she was 4'10", so that might add an inch to Shelly, making her around 5'6" or 5'7"...

I hope I'm not discouraging others from participating, because of my enthusiasm... I know there are more instances of alcohol in this comic... like the first time Katherine went to Darin's bar, or Monica going back to Darin's after a long time, and he pulls out a bottle of something expensive (still looking for that link...) I'm pretty sure there are other times we see Darin's, or even the Cerberus Club.

Maybe I'll just shut up and see what others can pull up, from what's left after my entries...
I may not be remembering correctly, but I believe that the bottle Darin pulled out was the Macallan. ((The Macallan is my favorite single malt so my memory may be influenced by partiality. Its pricey and worth every cent.)) 8-)
I just happened to run across it, and it is indeed an 18 year Macallan...

YES!

Incidentally, I'm searching for that link, as I seem to have misplaced it... but that is definitely the one I was referring to as being hurt while on a guest strip.

Only one to go, where an over-friendly person inadvertently hurt Monica's chest...
I finally ran across it. It turns out I hadn't misplaced the link, but rather I had never bookmarked it...

This comic seems to bear this out, as well as this one, two days later, while this one makes Shelly look much taller. But since most other times the size difference is less, I will count this one as an anomaly.

Time for a hint?

We're dealing with (in-comic) mental calculations in which Shelly's employed as a yardstick.

One more hint, then? We're talking Shelly doing some quick and practical height assessment, using her own height for comparison. She failed to account for width though.

Have to admit, on this one I'm like that tree in the Time Forest that Shelly chopped down.

...

... that ...

... I ...

.... auuugh!

It's ever so slightly oblique, but okay, have a third hint:

I have to admit, I haven't really had time to look, lately... I'll see if I can do better tonight.

I was right! I just didn't have the proof until now...

Shelly is 5'5".

Two things are funny about this question and the hints:
First, I think I did see it earlier, when I started looking for the answer, but I was looking too quickly, not paying attention to details.
Second, I thought that "... ... that ... ... I ... ....auuugh!" was something Shelly said as a result of her miscalculating whatever she was trying to figure out. Although the "augh!" might somewhat fit, as we see her, a few comics earlier, in her apartment with a decrepit Christmas tree while we hear Charlie Brown cry out that he killed his tree ("Auugh! I killed it!!").

As a side note, it is interesting to see how much quicker one can browse through the comic, once one has the PDF copies on hand...

Q: I am but a small opening, yet I bring joy and anticipation to any who seek me out with childlike simplicity. What am I?

The opening of a cup-and-ball toy, as described by someone who is being a bit sardonic and is not a pissed-off elemental?

Nice try, but no.

Besides, I don't think a cup-and-ball game does much in the way of bringing anticipation to anyone...

You know, I actually had to look up the name for this in a bilingual dictionary... I could only remember the name "bilboquet", in French... It sounds so much more sophisticated that way, doesn't it? - Or should that be sfizticated? ;)
(And now I feel stupid: I didn't have to look up the name, as it was stated, plain as day, in the text containing the link...
I followed the link, saw the game, and went to the bilingual dictionary, when all I had to do was re-read Dave's post...)

That's one of the nicest bits of conceptual akido I can recall! You turned my tree reference right around at me, and I didn't recall that Shelly had had another meaningful interaction with a tree. Well done! :D

Well, Connie was clearly anticipating shoving it up the blargelnster of the person who invented it, even if she had to travel to the Land of the Dead to do so... :)

I'd guess, then, that you're referring to the door of the "Elf House" in a tree at Lake Harriet. I believe I recall that we've seen Monica visit it twice? I remember her meeting someone signficant there (Georgette's sister Jill??). Can't find any of the links right off the bat, though.

It's even a "stumped" tree, from a certain point of view. ;)

I'm glad you liked it. Having posted it, I feared I'd vented too much frustration. "Funny" how the questions I can't answer don't frustrate me nearly as much as those for which I can't get an answer. (Thank you, LW!)
