Yeah, Fairport, I like that strip and that one is one of the greats. It's a good read for everyone...(the whole thing, not just that latest one...but I'm especially fond of that one)

I was raised in the Episcopal church. Ever since we moced to Gainesville, i've been occasionally seeing this church sign, and wondering about it. It looks like nothing i've ever seen at any other Episcopalian church. So i've been wondering - is it just something this church came up with, or does it represent something special about this church? (Perhaps it indicates that this is one of the churches that has joined an African diocese, in protest of the actions of the Protestant Episcopal Church in the United States of America in allowing women to be bishops and gays to be priests?)

Does anyone recognise any specific significance to this sign?

I roamed through the church's web pages and followed several links. Unfortunately, I did not find anything explaining the rather unique iconography of the church logo. I did not see anything posted that suggested the church was affiliated with anyone other than the Episcopal Church USA. My suggestion is to send them an email. If you're worried about direct contact, I believe that it is fairly easy to set up a disposable email account. Good luck with your queries.

well, lemme take a stab at it... OK... it's gonna rain and storm a lot, and then either Moth-Man or Aliens are gonna show up and gift us with GMO Wheat, that will then actually grow grapes that will spread throughout the land and we all live happily ever after ?... other than that, no clue...

If i was really worried about it, i'd drop in and ask. I just happened to have the camera handy when i passed it today.

The white portion reminds me of the Latin cross: arms of equal length. The white circle is reminiscent of Celtic crosses. The four arcs surrounding the white shape remind me of firefighter badges. The images within the arcs have ties to both the Old and New Testament:
Upper left: the rains that caused Noah's Flood
Lower left: looks like wheat, maybe the bread of communion?
Upper right: a butterfly? Not sure what that has to do with anything, stumped me.
Lower right: grapes - water-to-wine, wine of communion
Bottom: the water from the stone, one of Moses' Miracles of Exodus. Also may be mt. Sinai. May also be the "Rock" upon which the church of Christ was built.
The octogram (8-point star) doesn't seem to have any connections to the Abrahamic religions. The radiating yellow lines probably have something to do with the light/love/grace of god. And finally, the color purple has long been a symbol of royalty. I believe this originated in Rome.

That's all I got.

EDIT: I found some thin connections between the Abrahamic religions and the octogram- the star of Lakshmi is used to mark the entrance to a secret temple in The Sword of the Templars by Paul Christopher. Also, it's the symbol of King Solomon in Magi, the Labyrinth of Magic, some Japanese Shonen Manga I've never heard of (not much of a surprise, I don't really pay attention to manga).

Both of these are blatantly fictional, so the connections they make are probably very... Unreliable.

A cross with equal arms is commonly referred to as a Greek Cross.



This Greek Cross is fairly common in Eastern Orthodox Christian communities, though one may find some Western Christians wearing it as well. The example in the photograph has the word PHOS (light) and ZOE (life) added to the cross.

The cross on the logo is probably a Celtic Cross. Considering that the church is a member of the Episcopal Church USA, itself a member of the Anglican Communion, a Celtic Cross is probably appropriate.

I believe that the butterfly is a Christian symbol of resurrection.

Argh, I can't believe I mixed up my Latin and Greek crosses. :facepalm:
Interestingly enough, there is a character in the Wapsiverse named Lakshmi - Owen's Amazonian Girlfriend/Wife. Weird coincidence, huh?

The Hyooman Must Die!

We had some fairly energetic thunderstorms last night.

This is what i saw looking out the window (immediately to my right as i sit typing this) when i got up this morning (roughly 0730).



The image above is about half of a 109 degree panoramic shot. In the part i cut - to the right - a Gainesville city emergency services truck was sitting, blocking the road and waiting for the guys with the chainsaws and the chipper.

And here is what i saw when i got home at roughly 0915 (after taking the kitten to the Humane Society for his snippage session):



Note that they basically (for good reason) cut off and removed the part that was on city right-of-way; the owner can deal with the rest.
