I wonder if you could hold a lighter over the rising bubble and set it off when it breaches... :?:

Humm, good question. Makes me wonder if you could get a spark into the bubble before it breaches would i explode since it is in a confined area.

This (insufficient oxygen) would be more likely to be true if mermaids have gills (which it appears they do) and the girls had been underwater for a couple days beforehand.

This would provide a fascinating new angle of exploration for the methane gas bubble trap theory to explain boat sinkings.

Throw in a couple of electric eels or rays, so that electrolysis can break down the water into oxygen and hydrogen.

Or you could try sonoluminescence.
