Well, I had to put them somewhere, didn't I? The carboys in my garage were getting full...

My dad had left for work a little while ago, but came back, and started telling my mom something. It took me a few minutes to realize what he was saying.

My brother-in-law was hit by a vehicle while on his motorcycle. Ambulance was already there. That's literally all I know.

UPDATE: He was on the way home, and a minivan in the oncoming lane turned left in front of him, and he hit the passenger side of the minivan. And I had misunderstood dad earlier. The ambulance WASN'T already there; he saw him lying in the middle of the road.

UPDATE 2: Waiting on CT results. He's sedated and intubated (I'm guessing that means they have him on a breathing tube, but my spell checker doesn't recognize that word; autocorrect doesn't even try), and they were stitching his eyebrow a few minutes ago.

Oh sh*t, man.

My thoughts are with you and him and your family. Here's hoping he makes it through this OK.

I'm not a doc, but I would guess if they're already stitching up his eyebrow, I would guess that's a good sign. To me, that seems like "ok, he's not that banged up in the important bits, lets patch up the other stuff now."

I mean, I would kinda ignore the superficial lacerations if I had a patient who had just head butted a moving vehicle.

Yeah, he was wearing a helmet. Mom sent me a pic, and he's bruised pretty badly. Not surprised to see a neck brace, given what happened.

EDIT: Whoops, forgot to say he's gonna be fine.

Could well be concussed as well as bruised, I suspect.

Intubation, and then a combination of meds for sedation and pain control, seem to be common practice for injuries like that, and a neck brace makes all kinds of good sense. I'd guess the paramedics got a neck collar onto him at the scene of the accident, as soon as they could.

(Edit) They're saying he'll be fine? Oh, that's great news! Prob'ly sore and uncomfortable for a while, but if he got out of this without permanent injury it's a fine thing.

The human body is pretty amazing. My wife and I saw a motorcycle/car collision take place a few months ago... the bike clipped the fender of the car while travelling at excessive speed. The bike and rider flew through the air and off of the road, bouncing arse over teakettle into the bushes, and I thought the rider was probably a goner. Called it in to 911, paramedics and an ambulance and police arrived... and in the end, the rider declined transport to the hospital and went home on his own!

Sounds like something I would do, aside from the motorcycle part.

That's just the thing - he bounced and rolled and then landed in bushes.

He would have been a goner had he flew straight into a brick wall. It's not the speed that kills you, it's the sudden stop. He was fortunate enough to have his kinetic energy dispersed along several thunks and bumps and boings.

A joke with rock climbers: "Aw, don't worry, if you fall from that height, you'll just bounce. You'll be fine."
And then when the climber gets high enough: "Aw, don't worry, from that height, you'll just splat. You won't feel a thing."

Mom showed me a pic of the intersection after the police cordoned it, before the vehicles were removed. He struck the front part of the passenger door and slid along the side of the minivan, and had been going about 40 mph.

The helmet kept his head intact. The angle of the van kept him from hitting with as much energy as he could have had. The leather vest kept the asphalt from grinding off more of his skin. That last would have likely caused him to bleed to death; the intersection has needed complete repaving for some time.

Craziest thing is... The cop who was later called to the scene had already seen it happen. He had been watching through the CCTV camera mounted on the light before he got the call.

Yup. The stop was spread out over time. He went *thunk-screeee-tumble-fwump* instead of *splat*

Your brother pissed off Murphy, but he had a large enough reservoir of good luck to balance out the bad.

Better go find him a four-leaf clover to jumpstart the good-luck-recharge process.

When I saw the picture of the scene, I saw the underside of the bike. My sister posted more pictures to Facebook. The bike isn't nearly as bad as I thought.

As for a four leaf clover, I know EXACTLY where one is. My brother and I saw one just off the back porch of the house on the mountain, but we didn't pick it.

What's so lucky about carrying a 4-leaf clover? To carry it around, someone had to pick it - which was hardly lucky for the clover.

That's why his brother-in-law survived. The four-leaf clover was thanking him for letting it live.

Well... I missed work today. I took some Pepto Bismol a little before 11:30, and in just a couple minutes, it came back, along with my lunch.

I apparently have what everyone else had a couple weeks ago.
