Here's a counterpoint to all those lovely photos of trees in bloom, which were posted recently:

Friday, March 25, Good Friday:
Between ½" and 1" of snow...

And then...

Last Wednesday, April 6th, it snowed again...

Incidentally, here's how I managed to make my diesel truck startable in the winter:

That post is about 18' tall, and allows me to run an extension cord from my second storey apartment's balcony to the truck (for its block heater), and it's high enough to allow the snow plows to drive underneath it when they clear the streets. I have it set up so that when not in use, I pull on a cord that brings the end of the extension cord close to the post, so it's not in the way...

Getting up the next day (April 7th), I could see that we had had an accumulation of about 4 inches of snow (some areas North of Montréal got up to 10 inches...), and that it had been raining all night.

It is indeed raining, while I'm taking this photo:

Finally, April 8th:

It probably rained somewhere around 24 hours straight. Just about all the snow melted. However...

It was snowing again in the morning...

The next few days' forecast will actually mostly stay above freezing, with some light rain on Monday... Eh, it can only get better, right?

...

Well, it's a residential side street, and it's all out of the way of the plows and the sidewalk caterpillars.

Used to be that a lot of people would plug their car at night, in the winter. Nowadays, not so often. (Better motors? Milder winters?)

But for diesels, it's still imperative. At -10°C (14°F), it's hard to start a diesel, and it's easy to drain both batteries trying (happened to me a few times, in the last few years... Thank God for the CAA...) And our winters do get much colder than that, on a regular basis...

I do know one thing, though: next time I move, I make sure I have a driveway to park in... to make it easier to plug the truck in, and to avoid getting parking tickets every so often!
(Every Tuesday, during the summer, I need to make sure to park on the other side of the street, for the street sweeper to do its job... There were times I forgot it was the day to move to the other side... There were days where I knew, but had no room on that side, when coming home late at night, and set my alarm clock to move it in time, only to oversleep... There were times when I moved it to the proper side, but was too close to either the fire hydrant, or to the intersection... I'll sure be glad when I don't have to worry about that, any more. Not to mention the $120 parking sticker, every year...)

Then again, depending how far South you live (I forget, at the moment), I probably wouldn't need to plug it in during the winter...

In Arkansas, you certainly would. The sound company I worked for had a large box truck, and we had to use the block warmer all the time.

I live in Illinois, man. I know people in Chicago who drive diesels and have only had to use a block heater on the very coldest of days. I suspect something is wrong with their truck if they needed to warm the block all the time in Arkansas.

I don't really remember clearly, but I think there may have been, now that you mention it.

It's snowing again, today...

So much for the "light rain" on the forecast...

To be fair, it will probably turn to rain, as the day warms up...

And now it's raining... and all the snow from this morning has melted away...

Why does it feel like someone's having fun at our expense? :?

I got rear ended at work today. Thankfully it was in the company car.

I was getting ready to get on the service road, when the whole car jumped forward a few inches, and my glasses went flying.

So, in the whole mess, I learned my boss did not have the presence of mind to put the registration in the car. Thankfully I didn't get a ticket for that. However, after everyone else had left, I found that the car wouldn't start. We ended up fixing the issue by giving it a jump.

The silver lining in this is that I got an extra two hours on the clock.

Depending on how hard the car was hit, you might want to have yourself checked out. If you end up with whiplash, or something, later on, and never had yourself checked out, it becomes harder, if not impossible, to claim it as a work accident.

My glasses fly off if I turn my head too fast, and I'm not in any pain, so I'm sure that I'm fine.

Get checked anyway.
