Well, the other two I'd class as "it's gotta be SOME dog breed, there's no good fit, this is the least-bad fit". But that one actually looks like a good match.

I got a Dutch Sheperd Dog. Apparently that breed is "Smart, athletic, and independent-minded."

Huh.

I wouldn't say I am physically similar to a Dutch shepherd dog, but I don't think I can argue with the personality type.

In Natalie's case, I suspect the pattern of her dark bangs against her light facial skin may have matched fairly well to the "white face with dark patches over the eyes" of the canine exemplar.

Well, I'd actually got some response. I'd applied to work as a book associate at Hastings, and I got an emailed response from them saying they received my application, and it's gonna be reviewed.

Still haven't heard back from the gaming store I'd applied to last week. They said over the phone that I'd get an email this week. Haven't yet. Oh well.

Also, I had $5 yesterday that my sister had given me for gas the other week. I spent $4 to get a pair of scratch off tickets, and won $9, then used that with the other dollar and bought five more tickets. Four duds, and the last one got me $10. I'm wondering if I should push my luck, since that particular game has odds of winning anything at 1 in 4.1, so I'd likely get two winners. Though it is possible to get five duds.

The house ALWAYS wins. Quit while you are ahead, dude. The lottery is no different from Vegas. The math is stacked against you, no matter how good they say the odds are. Trust me. If they weren't, the company wouldn't make a profit.

The "expected returns" on most state and local lotteries are awful... much worse than most Vegas games. By design, the government-sanctioned lotteries usually return about half of their cash intake to the players. The rest goes into the government coffers (with some going to the game operators, stores which sell tickets, etc.). So, every round of lottery ticket-buying you play is pretty much equivalent to "take half of the money, burn it, put the other half back into your pocket, and then decide whether to do this again tomorrow."

The only time that "expected return" on those lotteries even approaches 100% (or exceeds it) is if several previous lotteries have gone by without a big winner, and the jackpot has accumulated.

Even then, though, it's a lousy game. The lotteries tend to have a very very few really big prizes, and a larger number of small wins. So, even if the "expected return" exceeds 100% due to accumulation of $$$, most of the people who win receive only a small payback. A handful of people receive huge winnings... and by all accounts, many or most of these mega-winners "crash and burn" within a decade and ruin their lives... sudden, massive wealth is a tricky thing to handle. Very few of the people who play lottery, find themselves genuinely better off as a result of doing so.

So, yeah, stay away from lotteries and from gambling in general. It's an expensive amusement at its best, it's full of false hope and broken dreams, it's a lousy way to try to stabilize your finances, and for a lot of people it's as addictive and dangerous as cocaine or alcohol or heroin.

Poverty sucks. Staying stuck in poverty by throwing away money on a lottery is just buying into further suckitude.

One suggestion: if you find yourself with an extra $5 or $10 burning a hole in your pocket, find a good used book store (they still exist) or hit a Goodwill or the like, and buy a book about some practical skill. Home improvement projects, shop projects, car repair, gardening, economics, business, painting, science or math, whatever. Doesn't have to be the latest-and-greatest, doesn't have to be something for which you have an immediate need... but it should be something which will teach you something you do not know. Buy it, take it home, and read it. It's fertilizer for your mind, and fertilizer for your future career. When you finish the book, pass it on to a friend (or see if you can sell it back to the bookstore for a dollar) and buy another one... or keep it if it has enough useful information in it. Lather, rinse, repeat.

There have been several times in my career, over the past few decades, when something I had studied as a hobby or casual interest turned out to be the thing which "opened the door" to my next job. Just being able to talk knowledgeably about the basics of something can make all the difference!

I'd already decided not to chance it again anyway. I really need the fuel.

Also, someone I went to school with told me that the company her husband works for is hiring drivers. I'd be driving a company car, not a big rig, so I don't need a CDL. I called first to confirm, and I'm gonna pick up an application tomorrow morning.

Update!

So, I filled out an application for that place that makes eyeglasses. They interviewed me on the spot, and they are gonna have their insurance company pull my driving record. Hopefully I can be employed by them.

I'll know sometime this week if they can hire me. Hopefully I get the job, as I haven't heard squat from anywhere else I've applied.
