Monica is seldom very civil to Doubt. They've tussled too often. And Doubt's won too many times.

Tsillah is clearly her own entity, rather and a manifestation of Monica's fears, etc, (Doubt and company). So - Liason? Bodyguard? Guide to new, different thing? Coach on M's newly realized skills? Scribe (documentation for the Biblithiki)? Intermediary?

Note that Tsillah has similar face markings as Nudge. Same family tree? Same caste mark? Rank indentification? Same hair salon?

And WTF? Monica's character seems to have completely changed. From pensive and sunshine to darkness and brooding with a touch of malice. When she talked to Doubt before, it was more of a sparing match, but now it's on a more somber level. Naturally the revelations she has had recently would have quite an impact, but it seems not for the better. Also, she seems to be aware of the fact her demons are walking with her now and what they are doing. During her walk to work, she seems to have taken an attitude of "just try and mess with me, I dare you!" Almost as if she is itching to be tested by someone in some way. I think her newly realized status has gone to her head. Any semblance of politeness is gone. Maybe she'll be somewhat more courteous to Tsillah once she fully realizes she's not a demon as such. Exactly! How many people do you know who can wake up in flames, have an unauthorized/unplanned/unexpected out of body experience, then get their heart ripped out, for good measure, by her friends just to prove a point, and still carry on with a cheerful disposition?

Or, possibly, this is a backdoor way of telling us more about Nudge. We don't know much about her origin... she's a "demigod", a trickster, and is much older than Euryale (and presumably the other gorgons) but we don't know who her parents were (if she even had parents... might be a primordial creation?).

Tsillah is a daughter of Charon, and he's the son of Nyx (night) and Erebus (darkness)... so it seems that she comes by her shadowy nature and powers quite honestly, through a direct ancestral link to these primordial deities. I wonder who her mother is?

Her choice of cerberi as "pets" makes sense, too. I doubt that there are many, other than members of Charon's line, who could name a pair of cerberi "Baxter" and "Boo" and survive to tell the tale!

I may be quibbling a bit here... but as I read it, Doubt and the other demons are their own entities... they're vastly older than Monica and will survive after her death (assuming that she can actually die at some point). Their roles as embodiments of psychological elements seem to be jobs they've taken on, rather than being their origins...

... although it's certainly possible (likely) that certain demons gravitate into certain roles. An effective Doubt demon would be one with a tricky way of thinking (bringing up multiple interpretations of everything) while a Vanity or Pride demon would be one which was particularly convincing at "selling" a positive self-image and glossing over or concealing any suggestion of a contradiction.

You're right, though... Tsillah is in a different class-of-being than the demons. They're... well, deathless interdimensional demons... and she's part of the primordial/titan/god line.

Maybe it's the fact that she's in De Nile about her power, but subconsciously she knows she has to come to terms with it and establish a proper control. Plus the trauma of seeing Phix pheeding in the library. Not to mention all the other betrayals and revelations and suchlike she has yet to really process. She seems to be more in psychological shock than anything else. Which would explain (but not justify) the brooding and attitude and malice.

When someone pointed out that Monica now has a striking resemblance to General Armstrong from Full Metal Alchemist:Brotherhood, I had to reconsider what M's expression really meant.
Could it actually be that she is now, like the General, reflecting on the problem of "With great power comes great responsibility"?
General Armstrong is a take-charge power-house leader-from-the-front type who takes her responsibilities very seriously.
Is this what Monica/Paul has in store for us?

Interesting that Doubt would not allow Specs to even get close to Monica, but had no problem with Tsillah walking right beside her. Either Doubt knows Tsillah, or knows that she is relatively "up there" in the hierarchy.

There is probably a mystical version of a locator that lets them know who belongs where.

Dave - yes, I phrased that poorly. Recapping my comments elsewhere (late, tired, sleepy), Doubt is a demon encapsulating Monica's personal doubts/insecurities, etc. That said, she is also an entity, apparently somewhat independent, and may also affect/afflict other people when she's not messing with Monica's mind. Her limitation by demon law is that she may not play those she haunts against each other.

I presume two things from this in the Wapsiverse - Doubt, the entity, will continue to exist after Monica dies (permanently, however that may happen), and that the insecurities she flings at Monica are not necessarily those others she haunts may have. Thus, Doubt is an incarnation of Monica's doubts, and no other persons.

If this makes any sense when I re-read it in the morning, I will be either pleased or mystified. YMMV.

Seconding Opus, FPF, though I have a keyboard/salad bar/sneeze guard for these things. That's how I manage my expectations.

YRC! Based on her trick of dissolving, and the fact that she's just shown Monica two significantly different forms, and looks about twenty years older than when she met Shelly and Justin, I get the feeling that her form and appearance are very much a matter of choice at any particular moment.

We also have to remember - she IS the shadow, and casts the person - not the other way 'round - so clothes, hair, figure, horns, etc., are all subject to change. It's all ectoplasm, anyway.....
