what "I" find suspiciously strange, is the fact that ALL of them, with the exception of Pickle and Atsali, are transfer students... Da' Bears from out west somewhere, Cricket from Boston it think it was, back east at least,, and the Tuna-Twins Jessi and Krystal from somewhere else, otherwise how could they expect to be able to pull off a grand deception like that if all the students around them already knew them from prior years at the school?
Pickle doesn't really count as a transfer student because she just started in kindertgarden ( :D ) and Atsali is the knowledgeable one here of the school territory, etc. so i think that she's been going here for a few years (at least since she was put into the orphanage i'd say)... to paraphrase Berdine: this reeks of behind-the-scenes-manipulations in order to get all these girls who are individually social misfits on their own gathered together at the same school at the same time, but as a group, they are pretty good for each other... ooh... i can't WAIT to see how this gonna turn out!!!

P.S. Paul the first word in the first panel probably should be changed to "I'm", or "I Am"...

I think that's Berdine. She went with the longer hair and "perky ones". Unless it's Nadette. I get them confused. Either way, I'm pretty sure she's one of the ursamorph twins.
No - i'm pretty sure it's Cricket - the "I left a school" bit seems pretty conclusive. While the bears might also have that sort of background story too, i'd expect Berdine (Nadette is the sister with shorter hair) to say "we" rather than "I".
Not Cricket. Remember the bear twins transferred into the school in the hopes this one was a lot better than the previous. I get the feeling their previous school was a human school because they morphed so well. They were making fun of the girls who looked down on others for any reason. Moving to the para school appealed to them.

Nothing indicates the tuna twins transferred in. If they did just transfer in how did they get into the social position there were in? You don't arrive and just step into that position. They would have to vetted by other slobs and then accepted as leaders. Jessie was a leader as she told the others to leave Sali alone. Only way to make that stick was by Jessie being the head of the group.

You would think they would have used the door instead of bumping their noses. But with that crew you just don't know.

Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence... it'll be interesting to see what these two faux-for-real privileged social climbers can do to prove their sincerity.

A timestamped "selfie" involving flaming methane might do, if it exists

And, going a step further, we know that Atsali and Katherine were maneuvered into taking their Big Adventure together, which led fairly directly to Atsali and Castela being adopted by Katherine.

I think we don't know whether Atsali was previously in this school, or elsewhere... the physical location of the orphanage wasn't ever discussed, the group visit to the Library apparently involved the Library televorper, and hence the school may not have been in the MSP area. I'm guessing "elsewhere" as there has been no indication that she had any sort of social in-group here from before her adoption, and I'd expect that even a book-crazy nerd would have developed some sort of social micro-circle. Hell, even I managed it after a fashion within a few months :D

Regardless of whether the memaids are also transfer students, there's a lot about this situation which smells of a setup (and Phix made it clear that Cricket's presence here is no accident at all).

Berdine. Nose profile. Cricket's top of nose is drawn below the eyebrow line. But is is interesting about the "I" comment

WAAAYYYY too much information there, Krystal!

I think Jessie is telling the truth. We've seen she seems to have greater depth and self-knowledge than the stereotype of the Alpha Cheerleader. And if her mother IS that sort of stereotype, she might well understand it, and hate it, but also know how to use it.

And it's kind of... sad... that Krystal suggests she and Jessie only have each other as friends. If they CAN forge a relationship with the Dork Brigade, it might cost them a lot of their social status, but give them more people they can talk to and hang out with. Although lighting farts might be out.

I also think that's Berdine giving Jessie the what-for. Not only is she the more vocal and aggressive of the two, she's the one with long hair. And Cricket is wearing a short sleeve blouse... And has a rougher way of speaking, even if her accent has disappeared.

So, one of the Tuna may have something in common with Atsali's brother, Oscar?

You know, today, I can't tell what's true, and what's just trying to save face and do some damage control (poorly, I might add...)

I also find it strange to see Berdine being so harsh. They normally seem more bubbly... But then again, this is not without precedent...

Oh, and there is a continuity error: Berdine was wearing short sleeves, earlier. Nadette was the one with long sleeves.

And it couldn't be Calista, either. When viewed from the same profile, she also has short sleeves, but also has much longer hair. Both in the back, and at the bangs.

Come to think of it, while there is no particular reason for it, it is entirely possible for Berdine to have changed her sleeve style off-panel.

Rolled sleeves are the answer. And that flashback to when she was dressing down Cricket confirms who's yelling at Jessie.

I also think that's Berdine giving Jessie the what-for. Not only is she the more vocal and aggressive of the two, she's the one with long hair.
And, Berdine is the one who decided to "wear" a pair of pert little boobs. Nadette is wearing a more flat-chested form.

I'm seeing an interesting sub-theme start to develop here, as part of Paul's "growing up" arc. You could call it "Choices And Actions Have Consequences".

Cricket is certainly facing this. Her decision to "return humiliation for humiliation" has certainly had consequences... she risked being "exiled" back into her family's closed-penthouse environment, or being confined to Tartarus, or having to deal with the Jaguar Girl on an ongoing basis (one which appears close to life-or-death for her). She's been seriously chewed out by Berdine, and told that she has lots of hard work to do to earn friendship.

Jessie and Krystle also have consequences to face. Even if what they're saying is true... even if they don't like and don't share in the stereotypical belief and value system of the other mermaids... they chose to act as if they did. Jessie admitted that their actual behavior was every bit as snobbish and superficial as the stereotype... and the fact that she rose to become the Queen Bee of the mermaid clique suggests that she was pretty damned good at backbiting and social climbing. She certainly started jabbing at Atsali at the first opportunity, with comments which were certainly intended as a hurtful put-down. She and Krystle are scarcely "innocents". They "took the low road", deciding to play the Catty Mermaid game publicly in order to "survive high school", rather than "opting out" of that game and taking the chance of being the picked-upon rather than the pickers-upon. So, now, they too have amends to make.

Calista... yeah, there's a Sward of Damocles hanging over our little plant's head, too. She killed a Fae - one who in fact meant her no harm but was trying to protect her. She's already twigged to the fact that Fae aren't just all nasty stupid evil little things... they can cry, they have feelings, they're actually people. For now, she believes that the Fae she killed was trying to kill her and that she needn't feel bad about what she did... but it seems likely that she'll learn the truth at some point, and have to face the consequence of having killed an innocent person who was only trying to help her.

Even Atsali has had to deal with this, in a way... she's still dealing with the fact that her impulsive decision to drag Katherine into a Big Adventure, led pretty directly to her participation in the death-throes of an entire civilization.

The Bear Twins... we don't know enough about their backstory to know for sure, but it wouldn't surprise me if they, too, have some event in their past which led to their move to Gryphon High, and which has consequences they'll have to deal with.
