They're not. But as Euryale pointed out, Jessie IS Atsali's ally who has been keeping the school bullies from picking on the nerd. It is hard to guess what these revelations will do to that relationship.
KnightDelight wrote:Especially the bear twins. They act as if they were expecting Jessie to join them for lunch. Just seems to be gaps in the story. At least where the audience is concerned.
No, if the Bruin sisters had been expecting Jessie to join them, they would have indicated so to Atsali and Calista before things started hitting the fan, or would have been on the lookout for her. It appears Ms. Gottlieb was just in the area and overheard the conversation. I wonder how many others may have done that. Given that Atsali doesn't seem self-conscious or worried, I suspect their area of the dining room is pretty deserted. Well, except for the Whatsit, the Siren, the two Usamorphs, and the flat Fae.
I wonder if Mermaids have any particular racial animus towards any of those...?

Well, Pickle was running....
Yeah, I can't see the cafeteria being oblivious to Monica's showing off/intimidating Cricket, no matter how big the place is.
And Monica did stop by for show and tell with Pickle a while back. Normally I'd say that means other students would know about the Atsali/Pickle/Monica connection, but she appeared to Pickle's kin-dirt-garden class. Can you see one of those little kids later at dinner that night?
"And in show n' tell today, we had the Jaguar Girl come by! It was COOL!"
'That's nice, dear. Now drink your milk."
"*snort* Yeah, right! Hey, in gym class today that stuck up mermaid flashed her tail. It was hilarious!"
"But...she DID come by! She had spots an' everything!"
"Oh, shut up, runt!"
"MOM!"
So, maybe it didn't get all over the school.

But it will now....And I bet Monica never considered the consequences. Or if she did, it was along the lines of "Good! They won't mess with my nieces now." I think things are going to get (more) complicated.
*gets out popcorn*

They are?
I don't want to sound too critical, but I don't think the comic is implying what you think it's implying. At least, I can't see what you're seeing.
Oh I see. I just quickly read the comic and didn't pay attention to the characters in the last panel. I thought it was still Nadette and Berdine talking in that panel. That one of them was just greeting Jessie as she arrived to where they were in the lunch room. Now I see it for what it is, the other girl in their little clique greeting Jessie. Now the comment about the turned up collars makes sense too. I didn't even notice that before either. One would think the long blond hair would have sounded some sort of error alert in me, but it didn't. In fact I only really noticed it because I was going back a few comics to determine which bear was which, using frame two as my reference. Once I had that straight, I went to frame 3 to get the exact dialog for this response and it finally clicked. Classic duh moment. Skimming comics is not a good idea where Wapsi is concerned. Especially if you're going to comment on it.

Timotheus wrote:To be honest, just based on the relative sizes as depicted in the drawings shown, Calista is too large to be squished in the quite the manner as suggested by Castela's foot in the picture. Castela has been shown to have large flat feet of a rather elephantine or rhinoceros style which probably makes finding shoes for her rather hard unless she merely shapes her foot to fit the shoes she likes (most likely), but Calista has still been shown to be a foot or more tall without glamour.
Oddly, Cricket's feet look much the same. She seems to be wearing leg warmers, so that may be why. Hard to say. If Cricket does have the same shape feet, she may have a bit of a problem finding proper shoes as well. Could be pricey. After being stepped on, however, that could change. Her shoes might all be the same price now. That is to say, she could get any number of pairs for one flat fae.

I think there is a pan-dimensional Pun Jar awaiting a not-so-flat payment from you.

Jessie's ego has to be doing a slow burn right about now... She was embarrassed by the fact she couldn't hold form, doubly embarrassed that she was saved by a siren... Now she finds out that not only are the nerds chumming around with the true Royalty in the school, their aunts are the Jaguar Girl and The time keeper's daughter.
To quote the two headed Pod Race announcer, "I don't care who you are, That's gotta hurt!!!"
It's a good day when the high and mighties learn their true place in the pecking order...

Poor Cricket, the latest victim of the High-Speed Tumbleweed!
I wonder just how much Jessie saw of the quick confab? She may have to reconsider her reconsideration of Atsali the Nerd Bird, and her burgeoning Nerd Herd. Proof that it's nice to be nice.

Actually, I think she was trying to say something else when she got a foot stuck in her mouth. . . probably one those words usually spelled @#$@#%@#$! but it got garbled. . . .
And no, she is not hurt--she's a toon after all. . .

The bear girls don't like the 'snob' set, as seen when we first met them at the mall. Don't see where they showed they expected Gotleib to join them either, probably they expected the exact opposite.
Atsali was who they were looking for, and accepted Calista (tentatively) when Atsali vouched for her.

Check the letters in the splat mark and you will find #@% there.

Actually, Bud

Oh, alright. *Tosses in my copy of
Lady Cottington's Pressed Fairy Book.*
And after tossing it in, I find it is still magically in my possession. That may be why the jar appears bottomless. It physically stores it's contents with the contributor. Tossing it in must process the item such that it can be inter-dimensionally retrieved at any moment as it's need dictates.

When I study panel one, I get the impression that the sound balloon is conveying both Calesta's shouted words and the sound made of Pickle's shoe landing on her. Something like
this or maybe
this.
