Eighty thousand years is a long time. Just before the Viama Cell returned her to her point of origin, Shelly couldn't remember who she was o anything about her life before the Forest. When she returned her memories came back in a rush. Her story arc up until Bia showed up and spilled the beans was about Shelly trying to get a handle on her Sphinx side so she could go back to her old life, the one she had forgotten as she became a feral being while trapped away from everyone for eighty millenia. The Sage of the Forest would have had to do things as a guardian Sphinx that would have horrified the old Shelly. Well, Jin has always been able to hear Monica's thoughts. And while Jin has gotten what she wanted, and essentially human life with all the things that go with it, there has to be some adjustment to suddenly being vulnerable to things that were beneath your notice before. She suddenly has a lifespan, can get sick or fatally injured and is going to experience the effects of growing old. Monica will grow old as Jin does, even if she "resets" at the end of her normal lifespan as the rest of her friends remain youthful and vital. And Monica needs to connect to her humanity as she gets deeper int the supernatural side of things. While Amanda can help with that, she hasn't been thare and done that. Jin has. She knows what ti is to be an invulnerable, immortal engine of destruction, and having become human again, will be able to relate to Monica in a way that no on else can.eee wrote:Oh GOOD, Jin's back in the mix! Except I'm a bit concerned about Shelly's "...someone who needs you just as much." It could be that Jin and Monica are just best girlfriends and provide each other with emotional support that no one else can. Or it could be that Jin's having problems, too...
Also, I wonder how they managed the timing of that 'poit'. Unless Shelly has learned new skills, SHE can't 'poit'. Jin can, but how would she have been able to know when to do it? Maybe Bud was watching, she and Shelly and Jin had set all this up, and Bud 'poited' Jin in at the critical moment.

Eh, different cultures have different values, and each culture considers its own ways to be the proper and normal ones. For all we know, the sphinxes might look at our "civilised" human society and be utterly shocked and horrified by what we casually do: locking people up in prisons, having people starving while others live in incredible wealth, destroying landscapes to build suburbs, raising entire populations of animals for the sole purpose of killing them, spending a third of our adult lives sitting in little offices trying to earn enough money that we can maintain a basic standard of living, killing each other en masse over vague principles (without even putting the bodies to some use afterwards as dinner), green-lighting reality programme after reality programme on television, whatever.Bathorys Daughter wrote:OMG! After all, it could have been Shelly as the main course for the Apo instead. Though with that titan blood, it's doubtful that will ever happen. She may be more powerful than grandma ever was. Not to mention grandma going on an all out freakout to avenge Shelly's death if it did. She probably wouldn't stop until every Apo in the place was dead or she was. Hmmm, I wonder if there are any other half human sphinxes in the place or if they're all animal-headed apos?

I agree the forest started it but that is not where it came from. We know how Shelly was when learning to control her powers when being coached by Phix. The Shelly personality at that time was still the Shelly we knew just frustrated, confused, and angry as she struggled and learned about her past. At the time she met Bia the meeting and it's results were fairly hard on Shelly and Nudge went to comfort her and provide support. Since that point we saw very little of Shelly and what was happening to her and showed the personality changes. This Shelly has shed almost all of her human inhibitions and worries. She is composed and sure in her power. She has even enhanced her appearance by a large wow factor. Then casually announces she is a fully accept Sphinx, killed and ate the one doubter, is working with MIB and replacing Jin in it. Is this the Shelly we know? She has changed in major ways in a very short time. Something did happen to push the change and we do not know what. I find it very hard to believe she woke up on day and said to herself, "Heck I'm gonna through away everything I've lived by since birth, adopt a next set of ethics and view point. This will be good. I don't think this change is a sudden one. I think it happened over a long, long time. What we're seeing is Shelly accepting what she had been fighting before. Her encounter with Bia made her realize she can't go back to the way things were.

Regarding Shelly and why she doesn't need Monica the way Jin does, and why she won't be able to help Monica the way Jin can. I think one thing Bia told her was true. Shelly's humanity was burned away eons ago. She remembers being human, and for awhile she desperately wanted to go back to living a human life. Those who knew the truth and cared about her, Nudge and Phix, for example, wanted to give her that, at least for a little while. But the truth is, Shelly hasn't been human for a long, long time, and while she and Monica will always be close, she can't relate to her on that level any more. Shelly has excepted her place in the supernatural hierarchy and now has responsibilities and duties that preclude living a human life.
I think meeting Bia was the catalyst. Remember, up to that point, Shelly didn't know about her Titan heritage and believed she was going to live the normal "four score and ten" after which she would die of old age like any human. There was no point in trying to participate in the larger Sphinx society if she was going to quickly grow older, weaken, and eventually die. She would be at the bottom of the pecking order from the beginning and be regarded as a weakling half human who was going to be gone in an eyeblink (by Sphinx standards) anyway. Then Bia comes along and Shelly finds out she's actually a Sphinx/Titan hybrid, is immortal, and is one of the most powerful beings in the universe. That type of change does not just happen, somehow it is forced to happen. So my point is what did happen after Shelly met Bia?
I think that would be more of a chicken and egg thing. She would have to have been like that before she killed the poor hapless Apo in order to have done the deed in the first place. Obviously she didn't pull her punches. Of course, it may have been more of a fierce battle than when we saw Phix deliver the head exploding single punch. A more drawn out conflict would have brought out Shelly's sphinx blood-lust to an Nth degree, really putting Shelly into full-on-gut-level-savage sphinx mode. In some versions of the ways of the supernatural, the act of eating someone you have defeated imbues you with their "strength", that is to say something that will make you somehow better or at least more like the victim.
In eating an Apo perhaps Shelly has become more Apo-like, or at least has become better aligned with her grandma's side of the family.
