Was in southwest Colorado last week- visited Mesa Verde, drove through Durango, Silverton, Ouray, Telluride, stayed in Ridgway, and visited The Black Canyon of the Gunnison. It was nice to be out of the Texas heat but not so great to be a flatlander staggering around at the local elevations.

I'm not a native flatlander, more a native Northern Appalachian ridgerunner. But when I've visited the western mountains? Boy howdy. It's not the grade--we've got plenty of steep climbs. But the ever-increasing altitude changes everything.

The altitude we were messing around at was between 7-9K ft depending on location. On the way back I traversed Monarch Pass on US 50- 11,312 ft. Highest elevation I've been in a vehicle was over Imogene Pass between Telluride and Ouray. 13,114 ft., having a 4x4 vehicle helps to get up there and back down again. Heck of a view right before you pass out.

Monarch Pass is paved highway. Imogene is not, Jeep trail up and over. Photo of Imogene Pass is not mine, found online- seen on a couple of sites so do not know who to credit. All my photos are on paper- last trip was in late 90's, pre-digital camera for me.

This shot shows the pass, not the steep inclines and water crossings on the Ouray side.

One reason I've never really been interested in exotic travels, is that there is so much to see in our "own backyard"... This this further proof of such.

OK buckaroos, Airshow time again!

Last weekend was Wings Over Houston, quite the event with dozens of aircraft and tens of thousands spectators braving the heat and humidity! I chose wisely when I purchased a ticket in the photo pit- guaranteeing me an up-close vantage point for photos and a delicious sandwich for lunch from a joint named after subterranean mass-transit system favored by large cities. It was sustenance. Despite operator error with the camera, I managed to get a few decent shots of the aircraft as they paraded by in all their glory. The WW2 era examples were exceptional, the modern ones were loud and fast. The B-52 was out on a training mission and was kind enough to perform a fly-by. The F-35 was interesting to watch and the Thunderbirds in their jet powered yard-darts did their usual precision performance.

And I've decided to finally let everyone know that there won't be any new Jasper updates after this one.

I had to say goodbye to her last month.

Back in June, she started having seizures. After tests and scans, she was diagnosed with having a tumor on her brain along with a heart condition and other internal issues. A real WTF moment. Options were multiple surgeries with risks outweighing the rewards- or meds to keep her comfortable for what time remained. I chose meds.

She was a real trooper. Didn't complain, took her meds (as long as they were tucked in a delicious slice of ham), and kept going until she decided she'd had enough.

My daughter captured this image of J a couple weeks after the diagnosis, just happened- not posed. J was such a sweet girl, I miss her.

The fact that this sort of loss is inevitable, doesn't make it hurt any less.

I'm glad you had the opportunity to share lives with her as you did.
