Firefox Oddity

Post by Atomic »

I have Win 7-64 bit and Firefox 60.0.1 (64 bit), and it's been a bit odd lately. My updates auto install, so I'm not sure which version was the last stable one, just that the last month or so has been getting weirder and weirder.

I like to use the middle mouse button to click as "Open in New Tab" which used to be the default setting -- and still is, according to FF help text. It's stopped doing it completely.

However, I've found a work around -- hold down the Control button and middle click a tab a few times until it takes. Then it will work properly for -- a while. Some times it takes two clicks, some times changing the page will bork it and you need to ctrl-click again.

FYI - YMMV - AKC approved. Reg Penna Dept Agr. Good Luck!

And yes, I did the Safe Mode - Restart - Refresh thing. No joy. Middle mouse works just fine everywhere else, so -- hmmm?

I'll try and reproduce this tomorrow w/ Win 7, but MS isn't my default OS, so...

Out of curiosity, what mouse is it?

Logitech wireless M185. Downloaded the driver set for it, and the setup can't find it. My system reads "Wacom Mouse" -- probably my Bamboo pad. Never had any troubles using middle click for "Open in New Tab" until recently.

I remember having this happen to me once before. I think I solved it with the Microsoft Mouse and Keyboard Center. It lets you configure mice with multiple buttons, and in there is a way to configure what middle-clicking does, I believe.

It’s been a while so have some salt. But it may at the very least be worth a shot.

Some mice degrade over time which results in the center wheel no longer clicking or working like it should. I had that happen to me a lot on FF with an older mouse.

Oddly-er today, it's working just fine! The mouse is less than a year old, BTW.

Probably one of those hardware table entries that occasionally gets poked by some other item, then gets reset on the third Thursday during a blue moon in Janutween. I hate those type of bugs.

Adding the MS Mouse thing to my system anyway....

MS Mouse thingy didn't find anything it could do covfefe for.

And the middle mouse tab thing has quit also. Bah.

Update - closed and restarted FireFox, and it works again! Narrowing it down to probably a web page oddity that's resetting something.

Weird.

You probably have a buildup of mouse droppings in your Windows registry.

The only known surefire cure is to burn the entire Windows installation down to ash and then install a new OS (preferably something Linux-based). :?

What Dave said.

btw- so far, all I've done towards this thread is run patches & updates on Linux and Win 7; both of which are now Firefox ver 60.0.1.

to really deep dive it, I'd have to plug in a spare three-button mouse, and thats where things have stalled.

I spent most of today diagnosing, so far unsuccessfully, a 30 year old 4x4 Ford pick'm-up truck. but thats a post for a different thread...

I'm running NoScript and AdBlocker Ultimare. It seems NS on Default for a website borks the middle click, but changing it to Trusted /Temp Trusted activates it. Sometimes just reloading a site will fix it, or doing a Ctrl-MidClick will activate proper function.

FYI. At least I can live with it now. Happy hunting!
