At a guess: she was stressed, and possibly rather weepy, when dealing with the "OMG what have I done?!?" aftermath of her haircut. Tears tend to lead to post-nasal drip, and this often leads to really funky breath.

Also, the body's fight-or-flight reactions kick up adrenaline levels and other hormones and can put the body into an "anaerobic metabolism" mode (burning fats and proteins for energy, rather than glycogen) and these can also lead to some funky-smelling biochemical reactions.

That limburger-garlic-and-anchovy pizza she had at the mall just before the haircut might be involved, too... funky breath and a "Oh, my god, cut this girl's hair fast and get her out of here before she drives away the rest of our customers!" service from the salon owner.

Yeah, 'cause the Rosebush-Oatmeal Cookie aroma is likely a Nadette by-product.

I can imagine the rose/cookie perfume as being a kind of vanilla/rose base with a touch of warm molasses and slightly acid raisin overtones. It would probably be a good selling scent if it could be mass-produced.

- It's very likely Atsali has Nadette's smell on her (I am really trying very hard to avoid the n'yuk, n'yuk, n'yuk aspect of having one's lover's smell on you, but then I think- "why am I trying so hard?"...)

- Castela is a plant/human hybrid. Shes already mentioned being able to 'smell that you were frightened', in affect.

- Atsali and Castela grew up as siblings, esp i the Orphanage- they likely have smelled many a thing over the years. But again, Castela's 'nose' is like no other...

I have to say I really am liking Atsali's new haircut! I love having long hair myself but I occasionally toy with the idea of a short haircut, something asymmetrical I could spike up and such. But my love of doing funky braids always stops me!

Remind me to try to find that copy of "The Sixty Sequential Sacrileges Of Tsao Tsao" to loan her. Liu Kao thought very highly of it, according to Number Ten Ox, and she would probably find it quite instructive.

Or maybe get her an apprenticeship under Jicker, from Zenna Henderson's "Return".

Oh, yes, I remember Jicker. We fished him off of the roof of his cabin after the flood. Never heard such cussing in all my life. Ten minutes solid without repeating himself once!
