I remember that they refer to themselves as "eaters".
isn't that the one where Humanity was actually the "primitive" descendants of some super high tech spacer's that when they landed on Earth it was already inhabited by mega-huge colonies of ANTS, and both species got into a war that left them and us as in the state of affairs we are in now and that we created the spiders to take them out and that this one guy somehow could hear them communicating?
Maybe? That last bit sounds right.

The ants had the guy corneeed because hr could hear the spiders and knew the truth.

yep, and the spiders said that they "thought" they could save us, and he got all happy, until they pointed out that "oh, no. we meant that we could save the human RACE, NOT you personally"... just as the guy and the spider he was talking to get swarmed over and eaten alive by a REALLY big bunch of ants... if that's the one... but, even though i KNOW i have the book on my shelf SOMEWHERE, for the life of me i can't remember what the title or author are... blargh...

That's precisely it!
I flipped through 4 anthologies trying to find it. Whatever the title is, it doesn't lend itself to the association with spiders. I still couldn't find it.

Though I did find a really short story called Pattern by Fredric Brown. It's got a hell of a twist.

One of my other anthologies has Call me Joe and Hark, Who Goes There? one right after the other. The latter of course being the basis for John Carpenter's The Thing and the former being one of the major things Cameron ripped off for Avatar. Handicapped military veteran control an artificial Alien body remotely. Right down to the pilot abandoning his human life to control the bioroid or whatever they called it.

And, I also remembered this http://jklind.deviantart.com/art/KILL-I ... -452445127

It took me forever to find it in my tumblr. I didn't realize I had that many pics tagged with “spider", but none with the other obvious tag. BTW if you're an arachnophobe on any level, you really really REALLY don't want to click that pic link.

If you do, any psychological trauma is your own fault. I warned you.

Doesn't sound like Commonwealth, or FPF prolly would mentioned it. Thranx are more mantis than ant anyway.

C.J. Cherryh, Serpent's Reach maybe?

So many books over the years...

Talking to spider's...Colin Wilson, Spider World series, but that was evolution, not spacers colonizing...
Yanno how some people have Angels/Devils for a conscience? I have a Dark Elf ShadowKnight and a Half Elf Ranger for mine. The really bad part is when they agree on something.

Ugh. I tried searching the "oh, no. we meant that we could save the human RACE, NOT you personally" line. But all I got was a bunch of depopulationist garbage. The answer is a drastic redistribution of wealth, not killing 1/3 of humanity. And if we're going for the latter, let's make it the politicians, the blue bloods, the banksters the heads of the multinational corporations, and anyone else in the “Milner Group". You know, thw people that cause a rather large chunk of the world's problems.

Arachnid not insect.

Sorry, I couldn't help myself.
Sorry. That was a direct quote, and I didn't feel I should paraphrase, at the time. In retrospect, I guess I should have...

About 5%. But, quality not quantity.

I guess it would be lack of quality in this case. We are talking about some of the most selfish people on the face of the planet.

At any rate, we'd also need to retool the entire system. Otherwise we'd just end up with more jerks filling the power vacuum.
