The Malloreon obsession with rank was more imposed by their government. Tolnedrans were always obsessed with rank. During Belgarath's first trip to the Vale from Gara, he noticed they spent most of their free time determining what their rank was and how to increase it. That's why they refused to live outside of villages... They would rather walk several miles to their fields every day than be called peasants.

I used to own a Tolendran... four cylinder... ran on three... usually... miserable thing to tune... drank oil... sunroof leaked, but I don't think it was factory- looked like the roof was cut with a can-opener and trimmed with a nail file. Odd size tires... left and right didn't match and I am told it was supposed to be that way. Had a urinal built into the driver's compartment... which might be why the windshield washer always made the glass stink.

Yanno how some people have Angels/Devils for a conscience? I have a Dark Elf ShadowKnight and a Half Elf Ranger for mine. The really bad part is when they agree on something.
