Sadly, yes. The first two generations of heavy bionic add-on weaponry did not work out.

Neither the bullista, nor the Cattling gun actually proved to be practical.

(Stolen from Spider Robinson's "Silly Weapons Throughout History", which also introduced the dogapult, the guided missal, and the "disgusting but effective" snotgun)

Was that the book that included "hand grenadiers" (with a hand-shaped bucket on the catapult large enough to toss a whole squad at a time)?
