Warrl, I concur with your analysis of PDF. For online access to a database, I wrote a PHP-based site drawing info from mySql. High Plains Icons is niche site that features nationally-known locals (like 2015 National Teacher of the Year Shanna Peeples), sorted by birth and death date.

It would not be too difficult develop a site driven by the databases created by jwhouk and louisxiv's research. I've got too many irons in the fire to volunteer to write a search engine, but I will volunteer a mySql DB and hosting.

And he already found a mistake:

"Illinois" not "Illanois".

And WOW... 1,625 appearances for Monica? And we haven't seen her since December!

Thanks, fixed in source.

1,625 appearances, speech bubbles from off-frame, or significant (to me…) mentions by other characters

Just thought I would let you know I had use for both the character list and the index today looking for a strip that I linked to in a comment to another web comic (Grrl Power). Thank you for your work. You saved me literally hours of work.

Opportunity in the Critical Eyeballs Dept:

I’ve put together an integrated Help/About page for the three comic index pages, with the intent of removing most of the current header how-to help / information / progress notes from the index pages themselves to focus them on their search function.

The draft help / about is at comicindexes. EDIT: replaced, see below

Feedback on content and ordering would be appreciated, and indeed whether I should split Help from About – in which case where to draw that line, too.

N.B. formatting is, intentionally, basic as yet.

EDIT: Current Help page is at http://www.louisxiv.co.uk/comics/index.html

FYI: the Wapsi Square Index is currently at 3221 pages, 1159 tags

I’ve just updated the css (appearance) underpinnings of all three indexes…

Upside:
  • They should behave a little nicer on phones, tablets and narrow window sizes.
  • There’s a Help page. All the big boys have one, I understand.
Down side:
  • The nice scroll-to-top widget is broken for now.
  • I was quite happy with the behaviour on my tablet and phone anyway.
  • I need to add some more navigation shortcuts yet.
Feedback welcome, as ever…

I don't think I have mentioned how you link directly to a tag in the index – I’ve only just thought to add it to the Help page in fact.

To link to an index entry for a tagged character, item, place, etc., use the tag name in lower case as an in-page ID hashmark link.

So to link, or go directly, to Atsali’s tag and description, use:

Code: Select all

A thing I’ve forgotten to update:

Now that Wapsi Square has its own tagging system back in operation I’m not sure how much value there is in continuing to update my index, beyond completeness perhaps.

I don't know if Paul and his minions will be back filling the years of missing tags on the Wapsi site – has he said anything on Facebook?

Currently Wapsi's tagging runs from start to 2002-08-02 then 2015-08-27 forward.

Heh. Just spotted a Monica <> Atsali tag error there...

Paul's tagging relied heavily on your own, Louis, so I'd say keep it going as much as you can or care to do.

Cool. The basic index data is on GitHub. It should be easy to pull it down, and reformat it into whatever the Wapsi site software can import in bulk and then just go through tweaking for differences in approach. I'm actually a bit surprised so little is done yet.

Why so? I doubt anyone will need my index once the official one is complete online.

Does Paul have a searchable index? Because that is a huge timesaver when hunting for a specific strip in the archives.

Maybe you, Paul, and his paid nerds can collaborate, and figure out a solution.

QFT - in case this past summer's little "hiatus" didn't drive that point home.

Point. The Wapsi site doesn't seem to allow selection of multiple characters, x and y and z, either.

Whatever, there is not a problem requiring a solution, just the question of whether with an official index emerging my version provides enough extra value to justify me spending time on it. I'd be happy to be redundant...

Update: the Wapsi Square index page currently covers 3441 pages of the main comic*, with 1245 tags of people, places and things for your search and selection pleasure.

* so no eBay- or Patreon- only material, f'rinstance.

Yes, I update the index page(s) frequently, usually weekly, but forget to mention it for months…
