They would be cute if they hadn't been drawn like a pair of chinese fingertraps tacked onto the back of her head.
coupla three things:
Marry sir, Atsali is wearing her dorky glasses and ugly braids as a way to turn down "teh sexy"; moreover, to blend in with the normals; secondarily, she is out and about in society after all; sixth and lastly; Paul has drawn them like tacked on chinese finger traps purposefully in order to convey # 1 above; thirdly, thou hath missed the point of the subtle art; and, to conclude, the Honey Badger don't care.

Where are we going and why am I in this handbasket?

I'm tempted to cry out "Order in the court!", but I first I have to figure out whether I mean "the court of public opinion", "the food court", or "courting and dating rituals."
I think y'all are missing out on the real implications of those braids: Atsali normally has short hair that does not reach her shoulders. http://wapsisquare.com/comic/promise/ OK maybe it would reach her shoulders if she held still or used less product in her hair, but still... The hair in today's strip was mid-back length. That suggests one of three things.
1) Atsali's shape control extends to her hair length now. or
2) Atsali got some hair extensions recently, or
3) We have had another time slip and Atsali is still concerned about her inability to pick up on social cues.
I ride my bike to ride my bike, and sometimes it takes me where I need to go.
Opus the Poet wrote:2) Atsali got some hair extensions recently, or
Seems like a good guess... it looks as if pre-braided extensions are an "off the shelf" fashion accessory these days. Perhaps Atsali decided to follow her younger sister's example and be "cognito". Or perhaps she ran into Nudge.
I am, alas, too far gone in male pattern baldness to try adopting her new hairstyle next Hallowe'en. There's only so much boggle I could risk inducing in my family, friends, and cow-orkers.

She's not wearing them for you.
In fact, this is exactly the situation that Jin was discussing in panel 4.
Absolutely.
I said i didn't like 'em - sort of talking to the air - and if she heard me, she'd be absolutely free to ignore me or tell me to go pee up a rope.
That said ... i don't like those braids.
And i think it may be more the way they're drawn than anything else.
I'm OK with the braids, I just don't like her character.
...
Now that we have another age reference point we can determine the rate of time in the Wapsi-verse. The dates are a bit odd, given where she is in school and the "grade" level. A simple explanation is that in this paranormal school you are not so much placed by age as by ability and mental maturity.
Also, she is not built like a lingerie model. Yes, there are a handful with her proportions but nearly all are going to be much smaller - it just is commercially practical to cater to the average.

Castella's work?

Or perhaps she's wearing Castela? Her little sis might have gotten jealous that Atsali was going around wearing other girls, and demanded her own chance.
Hopefully Atsali won't start threatening them with a hose if they don't follow instructions before she wears them, though. . .
I kinda like the sexy valkyrie liberian look shes got going.

Well, I'd think it came at least to her shoulder blades in that link above,
And, based on the previous times we've seen Atsali's Hair Braided, there might be a chalking up to the vagrancies of Artistic License...

Well, you wouldn't expect Atsali to compare herself to a porn star, would you?

My deviantART and YouTube.
I'm done thinking for today! It's caused me enough trouble!

So, you're saying that she is build like a lingerie model - just not like most lingerie models?

Thats something i never understood about models. Those skinny little things do no look Average at all to me. I can not think of a single person that looks like they do that i know of. The opnly people we have that come close to that we call children and dont make models out of them.

And as far as where she is in school, if Peter Gryphon High School is actually located in Minneapolis and not in some pocket dimension, then they are using the US school system, in which Atsali & Co. are sophomores or juniors (10th or 11th grade), depending on a wide variety of factors.

I do believe he is NOT talking about 'catwalk' fashion models.... more the type that are in catalogues (and now websites!!!) for plus size women's lingerie - thin and curvy, fuller figure etc...

It is very easy to judge how time passes in the wapsiverse, it will just a take a long time to work it out... go back a few years in the archve, and browse forwards, noting how time 'passes'..
eg ..
The time either side of the '18th' could be as much as a few days, and could even be the *same* time frame as what happens on the 19th to 21st...
The time either side of the '24th' much the same...
From the 25th to today, it would be about 10 to 15 minutes, as much time as it takes for her to say those things...
The fact of the matter is that in Wapsi Square, just like in every other webcomic, it's all about that timey wimey stuff... Conversations that would take mere moments in real life can take several days to pan out. Fights (like the on in Grrl Power) that would take minutes in real life can take months to display in comic format. And then, once some action or dialogue is over with, the comic can suddenly snap to and span several days or even months, from one comic to the next.
In other words, there is no "rate of time progression", no conversion factor possible. Time will take however long to pass as necessary, as per whatever is happening on screen. So while it is possible to figure out to a certain degree, with much work and calculations, how much time has passed from one scene to another, or one story arc to another, the same calculations cannot be used to predict how long it will take to reach a certain in-comic calendar date (or someone's birthday, some major event, whatever...)
