So we're not back to the story yet ... unless these are flashbacks that are going to lead into something.
That is one unhappy-looking spider.
Foreshadowing?

How is he spider flying on the "string"?
I ride my bike to ride my bike, and sometimes it takes me where I need to go.

"Yes, headmistress?"
"Atsali, Ms. Anansi has come to my office to discuss one of her children who came home crying and quite traumatized."
"Trama, huh?"
"Scared and upset. Would you know anything about that?"
(Oh, bloody) "Uh, yes, ma'am, but, I can explain...."
"Please do." (Settles back, expecting one of Atsali's long synopsis)

Is "Reluctant" a synonym for "Reclusive"?

If it has eight legs and is as big as your face...it's not a buddy!

Although Atsali is an orphan, it would appear she had an active and happy childhood. No 'Oliver Twist' like upbringing there. thank goodness.

And now I'll try not to imagine that, as best I can.

Some spiders can balloon on their web.Opus the Poet wrote:How is he spider flying on the "string"?
Admittedly, this is one honking big spider to balloon, and it doesn't have a lot of string.
Maybe the spider is held up by Atsali's firm suspension of disbelief in gravity?

What has eight legs and goes "YIPE!"?
Buddy the spider.
In all of these looks at Little Atsali, I can actually hear her laughing.

Between this early incident and the subsequent one shown in March, there's a bit of a change in her attitudes towards the presence of our eight-legged friends. I wonder if her spider-swinging Adventure here ended up with the web tangled around her head and a very dizzy giant spider clinging to her neck? That sort of a dénouement might be enough to sour her on spiders for years to come.

Re: Little Atsali and the Reluctant Adventure Buddy 2013-07-
My distrust of spiders (it's not a fear, certainly not a phobia) comes from having the web of Golden Orb spider wrap around my head at approximatly 30 mph running wooded trails in SE Texas. At that moment, finely focused as my mind was on how honkin' big those monkey truckers were, stepping off the bike was a viable option. I stopped without incident, and spastically removed the webbing never finding it's occupant. I finished that ride much slower than I started it.
At home I bodged together a rig using a cane fishing pole, minus the string and hook, to point outward in front of the three-wheeler to catch the webs before I did.
And had to adjust it to lean slightly to the side to keep the banner of the Spider Clan from fluttering directly into my face.
Ever since then I keep a wary eye on any eight legged entities in my personal space... Edited to add picture

If it was that big, you'd have probably heard a long tirade of arachnid cuss words, because you effectively rode off with it's kitchen.Jabberwonky wrote:My distrust of spiders (it's not a fear, certainly not a phobia) comes from having the web of Golden Orb spider wrap around my head at approximatly 30 mph running wooded trails in SE Texas.
