3D printing to prototype sex toys?

Post by Fairportfan »

3D printing is innovating adult toy industry
Last week, BusinessWeek’s Steve Cooper reportedon how the arrival of new production technology was reinvigorating the otherwise stagnate vibrator industry. Cooper highlighted how Canada’s Standard Innovation is able to rapidly prototype sex toys using 3d printers, a silicon-molding studio, and a collection of 400 odd mannequins with “anatomically correct internal organs” to test its newest concepts.

“While we use technology to make our lives better every day, it seems that few companies have applied that thinking to making our sex lives better,” Osadca told BusinessWeek.

He may have a point. The Web is abuzz with stories about how it’s possible to 3D print for extreme demands such as regrowing human ears, so why not monetize the technology to disrupt an industry that’s proven commercially successful?

"...[A} collection of 400 odd mannequins with 'anatomically correct internal organs'...”?

Wow. That must have been a fascinating group of purchase orders.

The squirrels have beaten them to the punch, at least in a redesign.

But will it print with built-in memory?

The Hammer!

And the video is a must see! (if you like blinky lights and such)

NSFWork, driving, scout meetings, shopping (well, maybe), flower shows, and those with latex allergies.

And for the more Sci-Fi / form-follows-function types, Lelo products are the way to go!

No, LelO. Leela is the woman on Futurama (and Doctor Who, but a different Leela), and Leelu was a Futurama narwhal, and Leeloo was from The Fifth Element. Lelo. Spell it right.

why? sex toys aren't that expensive - just get one online quickly and discreetly. not that hard. some places even take custom designs so prototyping your own sex toys isn't really necessary... or am i missing something?

Engineering is engineering - and toy development just as much so. Personally, i'm not seeing any issue with this - 3D printing is not something I have in my shop (or ever will) but I can see it being useful for duplicating scanned images.

Makes perfect sense. Why bother making in clay, then plaster casting to create prototypes when you can 3D print a negative mould and go straight to silicone? Perfect for working a development cycle - do the prototype, ship the Cad file overseaseas and in they come by the case (as the actress said to the bishop).

Also, you can create precisely the shape you want. Some people have... Unique tastes... ("Some people juggle geese!") which can be hard to satisfy with purchased mass-produced items, and its pretty difficult, and awkward, to have a bespoke sex toy made for someone to their exacting specifications.

Or, yanno, do your custom design mold, fill with medical-grade sillicone, hand over to your beta-tester, and review performance report. Then modify base design as necessary until desired effect is achieved.

Depending on your supply of medical grade silicone and the stamina of your beta tester, you could take production cycle from months to days (if testing cycle lasts for more than an hour, either you've done something really wrong, or really right).
