The miracle of birth .. in the living room

Since Steve and Helen failed to get Casey clipped or Twilite spayed, we have four new-born kittens in our living room...

I've seen puppies being born before, but i just realised that i'd never seen cats giving birth - i wasn't really prepared for how tiny they'd be ... though as small as she is, i wasn't actually surprised.

I also wasn't prepared for how loudly something that small could complain so loudly about being pushed out of its nice warm womb into the cold hard world...

Somewhere, every two minutes, a woman gives birth.

This woman needs to be found and stopped!

Yay, kittens!

Yeah, I remember the first time I saw that happen. I had a cat back when I was in fourth grade who started having a litter before school one day. Momma cat sounded like she was in a pinball machine for a while.

Not so much with later litters, though.

Twilite was pretty quiet.

============

She appears to have accidentally rolled on one and crushed it, unfortunately.

Need to look up how to handle kittens and all that Jazz (unless this isn’t your first time). Sometimes, the mom will eat them. I’m sure you don’t want that. I don’t know if you will have to separate them from the adults and care for them yourself or have a vet handle them or something, but yeah. Bad things can happen...

Wait so the one that got crushed, is it alive? Original post says four, then one got crushed, and now this pic has... four.

I’m confused. Halp.

Four, then one more, then back to four, unfortunately. There was an addendum t the original statement of four.

Yeah, sadly things like that happen with a first litter. Burying a newborn of any species sucks.

Twenty-seven days down the road, they're Much Larger and they're beginning to wrestle with each other and at least one has been attempting to climb out of the box.

The three tabbies are male and the black one female, which i don't think i've mentioned.

The parents clearly have a good dose of Siamese genetics - first-generation Siamese crosses have a strong tendency to wind up solid black with Siamese head and body features (a Siamese is actually a black cat with a genetic condition that prevents manufacturing pigment in the hair anywhere that body temperature is cat-normal) and voices.

Well, Twilite has an absolutely classic Siamese head and face, with big ears and a pointy nose ... and Casey, who looks nothng like a Siamese, has the voice.

Oh, ghod, does he have The Voice.

So i'm nervous that the little black female will wind up totally a black Siamese

As promised, more pictures of twenty-seven-day-old kittens - two with mommy so you can see the growth.

Too cute. Cuddle puddles for everyone!

Also, baby latches for cabinets and drawers once they're mobile. My friends accidental litter had two hide in a bathroom drawer, one in a downstairs cupboard, and one in her wardrobe. The panicking she did trying to find them was epic level. Once I explained that she'd find them "babyproofing" the house, she found them all installing said latches.
