You forgot to offer said visitor a mug full of boiled camp coffee, with eggshells. That always reminds bears to be polite.

Bear in mind that the Bear's bearing may indicate he's lost a bearing that affected his bearing and may need to bare his soul to someone like Max Baer (Jr.). I'd recommend the meet somewhere in Bexar County, TX.

But then, some hours later, you'd be dealing with an ursine who has a bear of a hangover.

Had a very nice visit to Dallas area last weekend. I attended the first Wings Over Dallas Airshow, and it was great. The airport was small, so that meant the useable airspace was pretty much right over head. I was also trying out a new telephoto lens that turned out to be overkill for this show. The lens would have been perfect for Wings Over Houston airshow that takes place at a larger field so the aircraft are a little further away. Nonetheless, it was great and I managed to get a few acceptable photos. The main attraction was the Commemorative Air Force B-29 "Fifi". Rescued from a target range years ago and restored to airworthiness, she has been the only flying example for years. (There's another that just finished restoration and is now flying too!) A friend came along and he managed to get some really nice shots. The black and white photos are his, taken while he was waiting in line for a BBQ sandwich ( one each, rubbery). The grainy photos were also his, I messed with them to make them look like they were period photos, or at least they are close to period according to my eye. And if you look closely at the "B-29 Grin" pic, you will see the grin on the pilots face. I know I would not stop smiling if I was flying that beauty! It'll take a few posts to get them all in, I hope you can enjoy them. The only downer to the day trip was that I didn't have the time to see Julie, shadowinthelight, or Opus.

I once hitched a ride in a B-17, which also has a nice big clear nose. The planes are a lot more cramped than many people probably expect, but you get quite an impressive view from the nose. I'd imagine that it wouldn't be the best seat in the plane during landing for anybody who has severe fear of flying, though.

Speaking of landing, here's the angle of approach the B-29 had to take. And yes there was a passenger in the bombardiers position each time (coughed up a cool $1600 for the ride).

I'm guessing it was the fact the end of runway was close to trees and they wanted as much pavement in front of them as possible when they touched down. Trees visible in the frame are off to the side of the runway. The brakes did complain and smoke a bit each time she slowed down.

Just remember: Takeoff is optional. Landing is mandatory.

Nose wheel just touched, so a bit of burnt rubber in the air. The mains are down and something is smoking...
