Should I be worried that my spam folder has several emails warning me that there has been suspicious activity on my accounts?

One was from "I nstragram" (which I don't have, with or without the space...), several ones telling me about my G o o g l e account...

If I were at home, on my Ubuntu Studio machine, I might have opened one or two, to have a good laugh, but I'm on my Win10 tablet, right now. So I won't take a chance. I just deleted them.

I like the ones emailing a forward/alias, telling me they broke into my account.

I've received at least 4 messages starting with:
Dear Joetta,

Access to your E-Bay account will expire in 10 days. If you want to continue access to the world's largest marketplace, click the link below and confirm your account information!

My name still isn't Joetta.

Are you sure about that? How do you know they're not right, and your name was Joetta all along? Maybe you read your birth certificate wrong...

Not an email scam, but I'm tempted to call the local cable company and tell them that if they stop sending me three solicitations a week, they'll save so much money that they can GIVE me high-speed internet - for free - and still be ahead.

I sent a letter, certified. In it I explained that any further correspondence from them in the way of solicitations I would take as being requests for my services as a proofreader, at $125 per hour, minimum two hour charge.

Stopped them instantly.

I remember a British story about some retiree getting tons of unsolicited phone calls selling whatever. He had his home line changed to a charge line for something like 50 pounds/minute, and split the costs with an answering service. The people he approved to call (a white list) weren't charged, and the answering service provided the billing and collection services.

The answering service, of course, was more than welcome to listen to the spiel about enlarging your genitals, shrinking your mortgage, and getting a time share in Costa del Whoopie for the low, low price of etc, if they act before midnight tonight.

Much money enhanced retirement!

So I got a new used car yesterday and I just now I got a call from a robot saying my warranty may expire soon. I let it go to a human, and the (Indian accented) guy asked me for the year, make, and model of my car.

I asked them if they could confirm what company was providing the warranty.

*click*

Yeah, that’s what I thought.

I've yet to receive any e-mail scams that I'm aware of, but today I had my first ever telephone scam! Yay! Now I feel like a true piece of society!

I missed the initial part of the message because I let my voicemail answer, but apparently the IRS is going to charge me with. . .something, unless I call the telephone number that they gave immediately. The badly-synched synthetic voice that left the message apparently started with its spiel the moment that the voicemailbot answered the line, so the first half of the message is lost to posterity.

Got a call today - from myself! according to Caller ID. No message on the recording. I wonder why they think anybody is going to believe a call that is an obvious lie from the initial contact....

Sounds like luck of the draw. They try to match the first 6 digits to make you think “wow, that’s a local number, I’d better answer.”

Yours just so happened to spoof a number that matched the last 4, too.

As for why they bother: “think of how stupid the average person is, now realize half of everyone is dumber than that.”

They bother because, unfortunately, it works.

Remember, Average Intelligence means that at least half the population is stupid.

Depends highly on your definition of stupid. Lots of people have never seen snow, and don't know what number is down on a dice roll of 8 with 5 and 3 showing. Sir Thomas Tom of Appledore multiplied as far as four, and knew what nine was taken from to make eleven! No other knight in all the land could do these things.

For a while, as I was driving a night bus every Saturday night, I would pick up a client who had emigrated here from Haiti, many years back. He was an older man. Being a regular passenger, and not having anyone else in the bus at the time, we would often talk. One time, he told me of how, when he first moved to Canada, he saw snow for the first time, and was bewildered at all that powdered sugar blowing on the road...

Now that I think of it, I have several aunts who are otherwise quite intelligent, but will gladly forward all sorts of email and Facebook warnings, without ever checking on the veracity of whatever it is they ran across... For a while, I would check it out and reply as to how the thing had been debunked already, but I don't bother anymore... Besides, I don't go on Facebook all that much, these days, as I already spend much too much time on the internet as it is, without adding that particular time waster...

I don't think those imply "stupid" at all.

"Inexperienced" or "uneducated" are more accurate. There are doubtless many bright-to-brilliant men and women who have lived their entire life in the tropics and never gambled with common six-sided dice. ⚄ Bethial the short archer, and Vorena of Acharnae might well qualify.

Conversely there are probably a few habitual casino addicts in places like Chicago and Rochester who know far too much about snow and dice, and are as stupid as the average dairy cow.

"Stupid" isn't about what you know. It's about how well you can think about, and use what you do know, and how well you can (and do, or do not) learn new things and un-learn old untruths.
