Re: More Stuff
Description of today's NASA Astronomy Picture of the Day:
When does the line between day and night become vertical? Tomorrow. Tomorrow is an equinox on planet Earth, a time of year when day and night are most nearly equal. At an equinox, the Earth's terminator -- the dividing line between day and night -- becomes vertical and connects the north and south poles.
The above time-lapse video demonstrates this by displaying an entire year on planet Earth in twelve seconds.
From geosynchronous orbit, the Meteosat satellite recorded these infrared images of the Earth every day at the same local time. The video started at the September 2010 equinox with the terminator line being vertical. As the Earth revolved around the Sun, the terminator was seen to tilt in a way that provides less daily sunlight to the northern hemisphere, causing winter in the north. As the year progressed, the March 2011 equinox arrived halfway through the video, followed by the terminator tilting the other way, causing winter in the southern hemisphere -- and summer in the north.
The captured year ends again with the September equinox, concluding another of billions of trips the Earth has taken -- and will take -- around the Sun.

JRR Tolkien translation of Beowulf to be published after 90-year wait
Two comments at the Guardian story:Alison Flood/The Guardian wrote:Although the author completed his own translation in 1926, he "seems never to have considered its publication", said Christopher Tolkien today, announcing the Tolkien estate's new deal with HarperCollins to publish Beowulf: A Translation and Commentary on 22 May. The book, edited by Christopher Tolkien, will also include the series of lectures Tolkien gave at Oxford about the poem in the 1930s, as well as the author's "marvellous tale", Sellic Spell.

Here's a shot assembled from a number of images with Microsoft ICE - the original was a lot larger (and ran a ridiculous number of megabytes). (There's a larger version at here, but it's reduced to 25% compared to the original image}:

Their jealousy will disappear as soon as us southerners have our first 90 degree/75 percent humidity day - which may occur near the end of April, soon after the Easter Freeze.....or possibly before.
