I suspect this is a generational joke, and I'm too old to get it.

Kate, please think of the children before you start flashing gang signs.

Well, if it is a generational joke, I should be able to get it, yet I don't. At least, not if it's something specific.

What I do get is that Katherine is using rapper style talk to announce the pizza, and it's embarrassing and annoying Castela like crazy. That, in and of itself, is funny enough. If there is more to it, I simply don't know.

I got no idea either. I just know that kids got no sense of humor when it comes to parents

And for those of us to old to have been aware of it when it passed by?

My only excuse is that I was honoring the next generation's sacred right to have its own music and language, which is completely foreign to the previous generation. So, if you asked me who the five greatest MCs or DJs were, or the distinction between house and dubstep, I truly cannot tell you.

(I'm glad that Kath is tuned in enough to goof with it, though - after what she's been through in her life, she certainly deserves a solid opportunity to goof.)

I think a similar situation for you old folks would be along the lines of your parents trying to act like Angus Young of AC/DC, or perhaps Alice Cooper, Ozzy Osborne, etc, and doing a very campy and very bad job of it.

How does that translate?

Eeesh. The adjective "shirtless" comes to mind, and in that context I think some brain bleach may be required.

On the other hand, our parents may have had it even worse. To their generation, Elvis impersonators were acceptable... nay, they were even an attraction.

Hey, a good Elvis impersonator makes for a fun evening. Mind you, I haven't seen many _good_ ones. I grew up in the 70/80/90's, and listened to everything from Gid Tanner and his Skillet Lickers, to Glenn Miller, Swing, various big bands, the Era of Teen Death Ballads, Folk, Jan and Dean, Beach Boys, Beatles, Blue Ridge Mountain Boys (Bluegrass), Country (and, unfortunately, C&W), through Disco (Please, no more Rod Stewart!), Hair Bands, and so forth. There's something in almost everything worth listening to.

Unfortunately, 'Rap' that claims to be music is one of the genres that has little to no redeeming qualities. Rap isn't music. It's an art form, sure, but it's not music. It takes more than a rhythm to be music - it takes something you can use as a melody.

One form of music I've never found any redeeming qualities is "Industrial" music. I had a roommate in college from Ann Arbor that listened to that. It sounded like someone beating metal trash cans to death with a chainsaw. I've heard finer sounds from a trash compactor.

Actually, Pickle's reaction reminds me of my sister the time that dad demonstrated the proper technique for using a grain cradle . . . I don't think she ever focused on the video camera!

No, I'm not that old . . . dad had learned to use a grain cradle about 1950 for trimming up and where the towed reaper or sickle-bar mower couldn't reach safely. There was a patch that grew a lot of good grain, but was too steep for mechanical harvesting so they cut it by hand - when we went back around 2000, that patch was woodlot.

The farm my mother grew up on had a section that had to be plowed by mule, and harvested either by hand, or by mule drawn equipment. (West Virginia). It's hard to have a tractor on a 45 degree incline. They tend to roll, and that was 200+ feet from the top to the pond at the bottom. REALLY fun to run down, however, and I understand the sledding was fantastic. The times we were there during the winter, there wasn't quite enough snow to manage it.

I don't recall hearing Teen Angel . . . and I don't recall the opening riffs from Last Kiss, so I must not have heard it much.
