Valerie has an interesting perspective on the situation. I guess the best you can do, is make the best of whatever you can do!

Nyah!

I'm kind of wondering how Valerie speaks. From what we've seen, she doesn't have any lips... Of course, when you're dealing with someone who looks like they come from the wrong side of the Lovecraft mythos, that's probably a minor difficulty. :?

Or a tongue as such, or vocal cords, probably.

But then, birds don't have either lips or vocal cords, and some of them speak very well indeed... the beak and syrinx serving analogous roles. There seem to be two functions involved... one organ vibrates as air passed through it, and another organ (or organs) shape and filter the resulting sounds and add others (e.g. clicks and hisses)

I see no reason why Valerie might not be able to do all of those things with specialized sets of mouth-and-throat tentacles. For her, speaking might be a symphony of squirm!

And, if she occasionally mis-pronounces a word or two, she can't possibly lose face over the mistake.

It could be amusing to see Atsali walk in on these two and try to strike up a conversation, and watch her try harder and harder to practice reading facial expressions on them. Or maybe it would be good for her, if she knew that facial expressions weren't there and could just quit trying to read them and instead concentrate on other social cues.

Perhaps in similar manner to how a certain talkative bundle of vines manages. Or she could have a whole bunch of lips and mouths and whatever else, in the same place where all of those tentacles come out from.

Maybe Valerie can get a decoration like Bia's diadem, only with multiple expressions available on it. Her tentacles could reach up and switch it over to whichever expression was appropriate for the moment.

If she gets a diadem with twelve faces on it, she could cosplay as a character from The Phantom Tollbooth!

There was a character in Marvel's Excalibur who had a diadem which reflected his emotions. Also a villain in Adam Warren's Dirty Pair had a headband which showed his current thoughts (in words).

Ten minutes of web-trawling has failed to turn up pictures. If I find some in the next 24 hours I'll post them.

A certain green-haired warrior princess from Skifander has one such headband, with an ever-changing smiley face...

(Zeetha doesn't appear until Agatha reaches the circus, but that's OK, I'm sure you'll enjoy the read anyway...)

Agatha Heterodyne's friend Zeetha has a headband that matches her expression.

Technically, that's not quite correct: I have my forum preferences set to display the seconds, on the timestamp, and my post preceded yours by a full 27 seconds...

Fixed that for you, and you're welcome. I assume your seconds will be talking with his seconds?
