Wasn't that a favorite with the Katzenjammer Kids?

WOuldn't surprise me.

Historical oddity: Did you know that there were two different newspaper comics running simultaneously, drawn by two different artists ... but with the same cast?

{The Katzies ran from 1897 to 2006, fer ghu's sake - and, according to Wikipedia, is still running in reprints today, after one hundred and twenty years, and The Captain and the Kids until 1978...}

What a prime example of viewing things through filters. Her visions are spot on but her worries are obscuring her view. They both need to just pop over and see for themselves. Of course not speaking German is also a factor.

The problem is, we don't know if Nad' is seeing the current and not interpreting it right, or if she's seeing the future and is spot on. If the present, you'd kind of think she'd notice Atsali is wearing a Bavarian Bar Girl costume and singing. Which should clue her in that this may not be exactly reality. If the future... that's ominous.

I wonder if Atsali actually knows German or if she's just knows the words to the song. Also, I would imagine Sirens LOVE to really belt it out. I wouldn't be surprised if, in the Wapsiverse, some of history's greatest singers were Sirens or of Siren parentage.

So, you're saying that her interpretation is not germane?

Hasn't Nadette made the point that her Seer ability to sense the future doesn't work reliably for situations in which her own fate and emotions are involved?

A bit of translation is in order... There is one word in the verse Skylar is singing I can't make out but looks like Madl... with an umlaut over the a... but I'm not sure and the translator didn't pick up on it either...

Oh du lieber Augustin, Augustin, Augustin,
Oh du lieber Augustin, alles ist hin.

Translation:
Oh you dear Augustin, Augustin, Augustin,
Oh you dear Augustin Everything is here.

The back verse:
Geld ist weg, (not sure what this word is I can't make it out but it looks like Madl with an umlaut over the a) ist weg, Alles hin Augustin
Oh du lieber Augustin, Alles ist hin.

Translation:
Money is gone, Madl is gone all the way Augustin,
Oh you dear Augustine everything is there.
You know that light at the end of the tunnel?

Yeah... it's a bullet. Sorry.

German lyric:
ach, du lieber augustin,
augustin, augustin,
ach, du lieber augustin,
alles ist hin!

geld ist hin, mädl ist hin,
alles ist hin, augustin!
ach, du lieber augustin,
alles ist hin!

refrain

rock ist weg, stock ist weg,
augustin liegt im dreck.
ach, du lieber augustin,
alles ist hin!

refrain

und selbst das reiche wien,
hin ist's wie augustin;
weint mit mir im gleichen sinn,
alles ist hin!

refrain

jeder tag war ein fest,
jetzt haben wir die pest!
nur ein großes leichenfest,
das ist der rest.

refrain

augustin, augustin,
leg' nur ins grab dich hin!
ach, du lieber augustin,
alles ist hin!
Decent {i think} English translation:
oh my dearest augustine
augustine, augustine
oh my dearest augustine
everything's gone

wealth is gone, health is gone
all is gone, augustine!
oh, my dearest augustine
everything's gone!

refrain

blouses gone, houses gone
how do we carry on?
oh my dearest augustine
everything's gone!

refrain

even our great wien*
dead now like augustine
oh my dearest augustine
everything's gone!

refrain

once we had great zest!
now all we have is pest!
all is but a corpses' fest
everything's gone!

refrain

oh my dearest augustine
stay in the grave!
oh my dearest augustine
everything's gone!

Google Translate doesn't give an English equivalent for "mädl". The translation i found says "health".

Actually, "hin" seems to literally mean "broken"; in the context of the song and in light of Nadette's vision, "lost" would be a decent translation, meaning wise, if not b strict definition.

Kind of an affectionate way of saying "girl".

Except, as i said, the translation i found didn't render it that way...

The girl in the lower right corner has a head that is almost as big as one of Atsali's "tracts of land", and I think she was in close to the same position in the comic in the previous strip but wearing a jacket. One more strip and she gets a tag.

It's Japan.

They all look alike.

While I'm sure it was done on purpose, for some strange reason I cannot fathom, it occurs to me that this is quite the upbeat tempo, for such a downer of a song...

My recollection is a tune that has a hint of sorrow, longing, fatalism.

Now in a beer hall, lit up on suds, it's gonna sound like one of the happiest days in your life! Or something along the lines of drink today for tomorrow we might die!

Wurstfest in New Braunfels, TX is this weekend and next. Gonna miss both weekends.

Some time pay attention to the lyrics of "Waltzing Matilda".

The one time i saw him live, Bogle said that, when he immigrated to Australia in 1969, his ship arrived on Anzac Day and the parade was one of the first things he saw.
