Yes, there was an aircraft called the Messerschmidt 109, designed by Willy Messerschmidt, but its designator was BF-109, derived from the name-which-i-cannot-recall of the company that he was working for at th time. (Likewise his BF-110).

At some point he took over the company (or started his own - can't recall which) and his later designs - like the ME-262 jet fighter - were designated ME-whatever.

That's the one in the back of the pack.

It made for a rather interesting transformer for one of the Bayformer movie toylines. I forget which one, though.

And there is no such thing as a "Chevy" the correct name is Chevrolet . . .

The Allies won the war, if they want to call the BF109 (Bayerische Flugzeugwerke 109) a Me-109, they bloody well can. ;)
Where are we going and why am I in this handbasket?

That sucker had a Rolls-Royce Merlin V-12.

Twenty-seven litres. 1200 to 1600 HP.

(Probably one of the ones built in the US by Packard - which got the contract after it had been going to go to Ford ... before Henry had an attack of pacifism {or more likely anti-Semitic; he had, of course, paid for printing and distribution of "The Protocols of the Elders of Zion" - either to all Ford employees, or perhaps just to all Ford dealerships} and dropped it.)

The Lightning had TWO of the monsters - no wonder it was fast.

The engines had to turn in opposite directions due to torque effects. To simplify inventory requirements, the port and starboard engines were identical, except for valve sequencing ... and one could be turned into the other in the field by a simple modification, in case you had one good airframe with a shot-up port engine and a wrecked plane with a functional starboard engine.

(PT boats had THREE of the suckers.)

I swear i'm gonna get around to colouring Phix some day - unless someone else who does more of that (and does it better) than i do wants to?

Maybe i'm just jabbering here; i've been feeling kind of wonky all day.

My Dad had a picture (that, if i knew where it was, i would want) of Dick Bong in a P-38 when he did a War Bonds tour - while i'm fairly sure it wasn't one he flew in the Pacific, it was marked with his kills.

All forty.

Ah yes, Richard I. "Dick" Bong. Northern Wisconsinite, the Ace of Aces, has an airport and a "recreational area" named for him (actually a former AFB that was decommissioned before it ever became operational).

He and Billy Mitchell were two of the best when it came to the tactical use of planes - and both were from Wisconsin.

While I initially was all happy about the off-topicness due to the, er 'fork' in the thread, re: forked tail airplanes, then Mustangs and now here I come with one of my favorites-

The Tigercat

(methinks we should start a new thread in the Pub area.)

Well, we've talked about tails, wings are involved, and motors that purr and roar...

History micro-lessons cane be useful, and the Tigercat is sweet! Haven't seen a real one in the air though.

It'll be tomorrow soon for some, new thread will appear, and Wings Over Houston is October 17-18.

Like that? There's some scowling for your cowling
Interesting to note- the P-38 was remarkably tail-heavy, making it a rather squirrelly bird to fly. Could turn on a dime, but straight lines were a trick and landings had to be 'hot'. Pulling out of a power dive often couldn't happen.
Oh yes... your feet would freeze in the cockpit at altitude.
