In the small ways, and in the greater ways as well.

"... and not just as some monsters to be feared." That's not just a problem for paras, more's the pity. I think Devyn has just cited the frame of mind which fuels most of our mortal wars.

Crap.
Now I gotta rewrite quite a few major swaths of my fanfic.

In other news: dangit, Cheesy, I was trying for a hat trick!

And finally: Devyn's thinking more about the journey than the destination here.

Or when you have a news media that's primarily “fear porn" painting anyone who's “different" as monsters to be feared.

current themes: muslims, Russians (related to booting out the Brits oddly enough), and aneorotypicals. The last including both people with mental illness (whether they're coping or not) and people that may or may not have some autism spectrum disorder.

Being largely shunned from middle school on due to social awkwardness was bad enough. Now I get the evil eye from folks because they think i'm some emotionally unstable/unfeeling nut who's going to shoot up the place. (No, NSA and CIA, i'm not).

Dunno where i originally got that, but it's so true.

That was my first thought when I read this page.

My second thought was, "Wait...are dark matter and anti-matter the same thing?"

My third thought was, "Damnit! I don't have time to look this up. I'm sure GlytchMeister or someone else on the boards will know and share though." :P

I love how Devyn has such an interest in the way we normals see and understand the world.

I like Devyn's outlook on life and her hope that one day para's and non's will be able to work together side by side for the betterment of the world.

Oh Devyn, you little sweetie...

All any of us want is to be accepted for what and who we are. People tend to fear what they can't understand or are shown is a viable threat to them... and most legends and faerie tales are somewhat based in fact.
You know that light at the end of the tunnel?

Not in our universe, no. Antimatter has been observed. The existence of dark matter is inferred, because its mass is required to explain the observed movement of galaxies since the Big Bang, but we don't know what it is. Possibly some type of massive subatomic particle that doesn't interact with "normal" matter other than through gravity.

If I understand it at all, which is very questionable.

Dark Matter is a mysterious kind of matter that we can't see. As I understand, it doesn't interact with the universe except through gravity.

Antimatter is the evil twin of matter. It is composed of things like positrons (positively-charged electrons). Antimatter annihilates when it comes into contact with matter, converting both completely into energy.

And then there's dark energy, which is (according to current theories) an even larger fraction of what's in the Universe than dark matter is (and much more than plain ordinary matter), and is even less well understood. Its action is making the expansion of the Universe speed up with time (rather than slow down, as gravity tends to do) and there's some possibility that dark energy will eventually cause the whole Universe to rip itself apart.

Hmmm... maybe that's a thematic "out" for John's powers? They could be a coupling to a dark-energy field, rather than a condensation and conversion of dark matter?

Alternatively, consider "quantum vacuum" energy. There's a possibility that space-time itself is in an energeticalky unstable state, and could spontaneously collapse into a lower-energy state, releasing a huge amount of energy in the process. Alas, theories suggest that this "phase change" in spacetime would spread outwards at the speed of light, would be unstoppable, and that everything would be completely destroyed when the phase-change passes through our neighborhood. We'd be gone, with no warning at all.
