So, somebody gave me a bottle of wine a little while ago. Arbor Mist cherry red moscato. Now, I've never really been a fan of wine, but this manages to stand out even from the usual level of blech. Try to imagine a bottle of children's cough syrup that somebody decided to try to ferment.

Normally when I end up with wine somehow, I'll use it in cooking. The problem is how to use about a litre of something as. . .uniquely flavourful as this. Adding it to a pot roast or stir-fry probably won't result in something that anybody would want on their plate. I was thinking about perhaps some sort of cake, similar to a Black Forest cherry cake (only without the chocolate, because I'm also not all that fond of chocolate). Any other ideas?

That flavour suggests it's turned, so the only thing to do is give it a Plucky duck special...yucky go down the hole...

It's a shame the Sourdough bread trick doesn't work with wine.

Let it age a few more months and you might get a very flavourful vinegar.

You could maybe baste a ham with it, if you like a sweet glaze on ham.

I am a big fan of wine, but have no use for sweet wines. Except maybe a good dessert wine or porto once in a while, in small amounts. And then only if someone else is pouring.

The disturbing thing is that I think it hasn't. This is what it is supposed to taste like.

That might actually work. . .maybe with a little pineapple juice. Or a lot of pineapple juice.

Cooking wines are supposed to be ok, but I agree with the sentiment of if you wouldn't drink it why would you want it in your food?

Actually, that's pretty close to what I did. Some of the kids I'm looking after are interested in science, so I showed them how distillation works and then made some alcohol-powered rocket cars.

Sometime in the late '60s, some of my friends ordered plans for a pulse-jet go-kart engine from Popular Mechanics, or one of those mags. It burned acetylene and I forget what else, and was supposed to drive a kart over 90 mph at an absolutely deafening decibel level. Sadly, the machining required was way beyond anything they could manage.

When I was a young'un, I had some notions about trying to build a hang-glider. At one point, I also briefly considered the idea of dismantling some RPG-7 rockets and attaching the motors to the theoretical hang-glider.

I never actually got around to trying to build it, though, which is probably the reason why I'm still able to think back on such things.

I did manage to build a compressed-air powered go-kart in later years for a science and engineering competition, and it actually sorta kind of worked. Slowly and inefficiently, but it worked.

Actually, most cooking/chefy types will specifically tell you not to cook with it if you wouldn't drink it...so this sentiment is right on target. *nodsnods*

About the only suggestion I can come up with is probably not realistic for most- but an old party trick (pre-AIDS) in preparation for a 'Crisco party' was a wine enema- for those who enjoy anal- gets you clean and drunk at the same time.
