I know you had things like U269 and the Aztec Calendar in the story but I'd like to suggest another. The Mary Celeste. A British vessel who's crew mysteriously vanished. Although it was destroyed, I don't think that'd stop you from putting it into the webcomic, if you were interested, of course.

If the U-296 can turn up from a simple game of fetch, how hard could the Mary Celeste be?

If not the Mary Celeste because she was wrecked in an attempt at insurance fraud, then there are many other "Flying Dutchmen" in history to use after all.

Doctor Who says time-traveling Daleks caused it.

Lunchtime at the Museum of Natural History and two women share a meal in a basement office. A small woman takes a large bite out of one of three hamburgers arranged in front of her as she listens to her friend and colleague talk.
"Now that I've recovered from the Mapimi thing and Atsali is enrolled in school, I want to look into the Mary Celeste. I've always been facinated by her." She put a forkfull of salad into her mouth and chewed as she watched for Monicas reaction.
"Wasn't that proven to be an insurance scam?" Monica asked with thoughtful frown.
The quiet 'poit' sound of air being displaced and a soft flash of light announced the arrival of a tall black woman in a svelte business suit.
"That's what we wanted everyone to think."

@Tankcoyote - I always defeet my sammiches. I hate toenails between my teeth.

EDIT: changed 'lunch' to 'a meal' and added 'from' to 'the Mapimi thing' (I really need an editor)

This would really work in this comic. Good show. :D

Both of those lines came from the OneyNG parodies of DBZ. The first from Dragonzball P and the second from Dragonzball Peepee

Knowing those are from a Dragon Balz parody only makes them tastier...

I don't think the Mary Celeste was destroyed. It was found abandoned, with only slight damage. There may or may not have been some blood found. The crew of the ship that found her was thought to have killed everyone to claim the insurance and salvage, but there was little or no evidence against them.
Many of those old ghost-ship stories would be interesting.

One credible theory about the Mary Celeste had to do with it's cargo -- turpentine in barrels. Under suitable conditions, weeping turpentine will form a fog. On decent days, it was standard practice to open the hold hatches to let things air out. If the turps had fogged, the crew opening the hatches would see the fog, think "Fire!" and abandon ship post haste. This would explain the missing long boat and the meal uneaten.

Or they were eaten by grues. There were no brass lanterns found, so that's a credible possibility as well.
